    JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Travelers has built a solid reputation as a leading insurance company and employs some of the most talented, passionate people in the industry and provides endless opportunities for those willing to reach for them. With over 105 years of experience in property risk control and safety management, plus leading industrial hygiene, fire and forensics laboratories, Travelers Risk Control has the expertise to provide customers with recommendations to help control hazards and reduce risks of property damage or injury. If you’re driven and passionate about what you do and work each day to make an impact, you might be interested in an opportunity with Travelers.

An engineer or scientist in a Forensic Specialist position at the Travelers Laboratory is assigned cases that come from our Claim Department. Claims may originate from incidents that may have caused property damage or injuries. The job of the forensic specialist is to gain a technical understanding for how and why an event occurred, and to help others understand the facts associated with the event. The types of claims are highly varied and often require a multi-disciplined approach to their investigation. Claim investigations frequently require field inspections to document conditions, identify and preserve evidence, and to interview witnesses.

Occasionally these claims are resolved through litigation and in that process, experts are called upon to render opinions through reports, testimony or both. These opinions help a judge and jury to understand the matter and make an informed decision. Travelers’ Laboratory Forensic Specialists participate in this process in a several ways. They may be the actual expert, they may act as a consultant and assist the testifying expert, attorney or claim professional, or they may work in the background doing research and testing. It all depends on the case and how to best use the resources at hand. In any of these roles, the ability to communicate findings to non-technical staff verbally and in writing is highly valued.

Positions are available in Windsor, CT. Subsidized apartments are available for students who live beyond a commutable distance (50 miles) from Hartford, CT. Housing assistance is not available for all other locations. Positions are available early June through the end of the summer. This 10-12 week, paid position is an in-person experience.
