    As an Surety Underwriter, you'll accept, retain and price low exposure new, renewal and endorsement commercial business policies within your authority limits. We'll count on you to provide additional underwriting technical support when requested. In addition, you may triage business and handle renewals as well as pre-screen, process and prepare information for underwriting.

    About You

    A successful Surety Underwriting Intern at Nationwide has:

    Education

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience. Undergraduate studies in Insurance, Risk Management, Economics, Business Management, or a related field of study
    • Completion of sophomore or junior year is preferred
    • Involvement in student activities and/or some work experience
    • 3.0 GPA or higher is desired

    Skills/Competencies

    • Basic business policies, practices and procedures.
    • General understanding of basic analytical and financial techniques preferred.
    • Gathers information from multiple sources according to company guidelines, to support proper policy entry and underwriting analysis.
    • Reviews individual risks for acceptability based on company underwriting guidelines and standards within authority that is provided.
    • Ensures file handling quality and workflow efficiency. This will include completing assigned underwriting transactions and tasks within established time and service standards.
    • Enters policies and runs reports for the underwriting file.
    • Underwrite both new and renewal business accounts and endorsements in line with the letter of authority provided.
    • Works cooperatively and builds strong working relationships with territory, field, claims, sales, and other associates to share and gather information necessary to complete work.
    • Strengthens agency relationships through regular contact on underwriting matters, promoting profit and new business growth, renewal retention and service capabilities.

    Job Summary

    A day in the life of a Surety Underwriter Intern might include:

    • Captures information from multiple sources, account to company guidelines to support underwriting
    • Review individual risks for acceptability and handles those within authority, based on company guidelines and standards.
    • Completes assigned Underwriting transactions and tasks within established time and service standard.
    • Determines necessary steps to process work. Decides to accept, reject, or modify based on level of authority
    • Consults with agents and internal partners. Recommends opportunities for business development and service capabilities
    • Participates in the management of business performance as part of the underwriting team. .

    Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment.

    The national hourly pay range for Nationwide Internships is: $21 - $35
