  • Responsibilities

    PRIMARY PURPOSE:

    Under general direction, responsible for projects associated with the maintenance of tax records and the preparation of all, or specifically assigned, tax returns and related reports including but not limited to federal, state & local, sales & use, excise and premium taxes. Assists with special projects or requests as needed.

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Following is a summary of the essential functions of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

    • Actively participate in compliance functions. Includes assisting with the preparation of various returns, initiating payments (check and EFT requests), filing returns, processing payments, and other mailings, updating calendars and other related activities.
    • Actively participate in the quarterly accounting closes. Includes assisting with the calculation of accruals, preparation of journal entries, running required reports, updating account reconciliations and other related activities.
    • Provide administrative support to the VP, Manager and other staff as needed to meet the department’s objectives. These activities include actively participating in major department functions such as preparation of federal return, state tax estimates, and returns.
    • Actively participate in the preparation of quarterly GAAP and Statutory tax provision process. Includes calculation of tax adjustments, maintaining deferred tax inventories and tax basis balance sheets, preparation of journal entries, rate reconciliations, footnotes, and other related activities.
    • Actively participate in the preparation of the federal consolidated return. Includes calculation of tax adjustments and completing pro forma returns.
    • Assist Manager with various activities related to the sub-consolidated and top consolidated returns, and the return-to-provision reconciliation.
    • Actively participate in the preparation of the multi-State tax returns. Includes preparation of both of separate company and unitary returns, calculation of apportionment, the return-to-provision reconciliation, quarterly account reconciliations, and other related activities. Research and respond to various notices received for state revenue departments as well as any related audits.
    • Actively participate in the preparation of the annual premium tax returns. Includes calculation of retaliatory taxes, the return-to-provision reconciliation, and other related activities. Research and respond to various notices received for state insurance departments.
    • Other activities include administrator for tax software, primarily Corptax and Premium Pro. Includes running updates, assisting with company profile management, managing staff access, etc.
  • Qualifications

    MINIMUM SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education, training, and work-related experience
    • 1 or more years of tax return preparation experience preferably consolidated, multi-state income and franchise tax returns
    • General understanding of accounting concepts and the ability to quickly learn/utilize tax software.
    • Demonstrate a sense of urgency, detailed-orientated/attention to detail, and ability to be a productive member of a team
    • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, time management skills, problem-solving skills; organizational skills
    • Ability to navigate and manage change
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
    • Organization and time management skills are critical for this position
    • High degree of initiative, mature judgment, and discretion

    DESIRED SKILLS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field of study
    • Insurance tax and previous experience in corporate/public accounting office is highly desirable
