    Summary of Internship

    The Mechanical Engineering Internship position provides an opportunity for engineering students who are currently pursuing a mechanical engineering or like degree to get hands on experience working with engineers in a research and development environment. The engineering intern will contribute to development projects using best design practices. The position starts in May or June, paid working 40 hours per week through August/September. Opportunity exists for this position to continue through the academic year on a part-time basis to allow for class schedules.

    Essential Functions:

    • Provide engineering support related to product development projects including testing and design
    • Support a variety of development activities & may be assigned to a variety of engineering tasks
    • Be involved with many aspects of mechanical design & analysis tasks working in a cross-functional team
    • Learn about mechanical engineering through daily activities.
    • Accept candid feedback and look for areas of improvement
    • Provide feedback on specifications & designs
    • Specific tasks will be tailored to the intern’s experience level and abilities
    • An engineering intern works under the close supervision of engineers, scientists, and the engineering manager

    Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to work independently and as a member of a cross-functional team
    • Willingness to learn, be mentored, and improve
    • Desire to contribute and improve design of new and existing scientific instrumentation products
    • Exceptional customer focus
    • Good oral and written communication skills.

    Qualifications:

    • Student currently enrolled in classes leading to an ABET accredited engineering degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
    • Completed coursework in physics and design (elements or systems).
    • 0-2 years of mechanical engineering work experience.
    • Familiarity with of least one 3D CAD tool set, Solidworks preferred.
    • Experience using an office productivity suite.
