    Ethicon US LLC, a member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is recruiting a Post Doctoral Fellow in the R&D Wound Closure and Healing department located in Somerville, NJ. 

    The Ethicon business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies. Ethicon represents $3.5 Billion in sales across key surgical platforms (Energy, Endo Mechanical, Wound Closure and Biosurgicals). Specialties include support for treatment of bariatric, colorectal and thoracic conditions, women’s health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. The Ethicon business combines products and services of two market-leading legacy companies, both with long histories of medical innovation. Ethicon, Inc. based in Somerville, New Jersey, was founded more than 80 years ago as a pioneer in suture development and manufacturing, helping to transform the safety and effectiveness of open surgery. Ethicon-Endo Surgery was created 20 years ago in Cincinnati, Ohio, developing innovative devices that have driven the revolutionary shift from open to minimally invasive surgery that continues to lead the industry today.

    This Postdoctoral Fellow position will be responsible for the identification and development of innovative technologies focused on healing and repair of incisional (i.e. surgical) wounds. This will entail, but will not be limited to, the design and execution of in vitro experiments aimed at quantifying efficacy and elucidating specific modes of action. Material and surface based approaches (i.e. non-pharmaceutical) will be of particular interest.

    Additional Responsibilities

    • When appropriate, perform/coordinate basic and applied materials research on medical device materials, or surrogates thereof, to understand their physicochemical interaction with eukaryotic and bacterial organisms.
    • Collaborate with internal Ethicon and other J&J associates to further the Company’s capabilities in understanding and producing wound healing products.
    • Keep abreast of current published research in the field of interest by searching the scientific and intellectual property literature.
    • When necessary, author/present manuscripts, posters, or other professional publications.
    • Contribute to Ethicon’s intellectual property.
  • Qualifications
    • A Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Materials Science, or other interdisciplinary physical science with emphasis on biological systems is required
    • Experience in traditional cell culture techniques (e.g. propagation and passaging, 2D and 3D cultures, etc.) and cell function assays (e.g. inflammation markers, cell surface markers, protein analysis, etc.) for various cell lines is required
    • Experience with animal models is highly desirable
    • Experience with image analysis as it pertains to surface analysis and microscopy is highly desirable
    • Experience with traditional surface analytical techniques (SEM, AFM, contact angle, etc.) is highly desirable
    • Experience in traditional microbiological techniques (Plating, MIC tests, staining, etc.) is preferred
    • Candidates must be available to work full-time
    • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g. H1-B status) now or in the future. 
    • Demonstrated leadership is preferred.
    • Candidates must be detail-oriented, highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks.
    • Candidates must have the ability to work individually (independently) as well as on a team.
    • Candidates need to be proficient with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel (including a high proficiency with generating pivot tables and graphs), and Power Point, and have strong oral and written communication skills. Additional technical competencies in SharePoint and other information technology systems are highly desirable, as is experience with PubMed databases and other literature databases.
    • Candidates with academic and/or industrial clinical trial experience are strongly preferred.
    • A minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 is strongly preferred.
    • Participation in campus/community service activities is desired.
