    JOB OVERVIEW/SUMMARY

    As a Scientist I in Packaging Development you will be responsible for all R&D project work related to delivering and maintaining a robust pipeline of new displays, gift-able package propositions, in-market product improvements, sustainability enhancements, new packaging technology initiatives and innovations, and margin expansion for the Burt's Bees business.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Specific areas of long-term ownership in this role are custom POP display vehicles, Burt's Bees' annual Holiday program, Packaging customizations for specific markets, and cost savings and product improvement executions. You will support the Packaging Development function with strong technical leadership and knowledge of sustainable packaging materials with an in-depth understanding of the manufacturing and assembly processes. Project work will focus on secondary and tertiary packaging creation and optimization including shipping cases, unit load configurations, and POP displays, from idea conception and running through implementation to full production. You will act as the packaging lead working as an active member of cross-functional teams to implement projects, in close partnership with Product Development, Process Development, Global Stewardship, Strategic Sourcing, and Product Supply. You will also represent Burt's Bees R&D externally through interactions with vendors, Burt's Bees internal and external manufacturing to ensure package components meet quality standards, are efficiently produced and easily processed on the packaging lines. You will help create a compelling workplace based on technical acumen, collaboration, and a commitment to loving the lab.

    KEY SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

    TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS, YOU WILL:

    • Gain a thorough understanding of both Burt's Bees internal and external manufacturing facilities, specifically related to Packaging systems and capabilities.
    • Utilize technical skills and troubleshooting knowledge to successfully design, test and implement packaging systems while delivering consumer delight through package usage experience.
    • Implement packaging controls and devise test methods to ensure package quality is in compliance with finished product specifications.
    • Create and publish appropriate consumer- and customer-facing data (component and finished good specifications, UPCs, BOMs, etc).
    • Independently represent R&D Package Development within project teams.
    • Work in an environment that values collaboration, continuous training and self-improvement.
    • Communicate effectively within multi-functional teams and build strong partnerships with other functions.
  • Qualifications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • B.S. in Mechanical or Packaging Engineering or related technical field
    • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to effectively interface with cross-functional groups at all levels
    • Ability to work independently and implement multiple projects in a timely manner

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • SPC analysis
    • Experience with Packaging standards, test methods and best practices.
