    Capital Group is seeking to add an early-career economist to expand its economic research in close collaboration with the existing Capital Strategy Research team ("CSR") and the Investment Group. CSR is a unit within Capital's Investment Group with a team of specialists who provide high-quality, original, and relevant macroeconomic, political, accounting, and industry research that assists investment professionals in delivering superior, consistent investment results to long-term investors.

    As a CSR economist, you will conduct and effectively communicate original economic research into topics that are relevant for investment group analysts and portfolio managers and to contribute to Capital's objective of achieving superior long-term investment results for its shareholders and clients. This role will deepen Capital's current and effective bench of senior economists.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Conduct applied economic analysis to shed light on cyclical or structural macroeconomic questions and industry trends that may be material to investors.
      • Conduct self-directed research into U.S. and global macro-economic and policy questions that can be leveraged broadly across the Investment Group;
      • Respond to economic questions from analysts and portfolio managers;
      • Utilize various sources of economic, financial and industry data;
      • Use visualization, econometrics, data-science and other analytical methods to shed light on the U.S. and global cyclical outlook, specific industry trends and longer-term economic developments that are relevant for investors;
      • Contribute to CSR collaborations such as global cyclical outlook presentations, thematic research efforts and research trips;
      • Grow expertise in scenario analysis, including developing and interpreting model-based scenarios from external, global macroeconomic models (e.g. NIESR's NiGEM);
      • Build relationships across the investment group through bespoke research work, research trips, investment office visits and attendance of specific investment unit calls and retreats.
    • Provide sound analysis, thoughtful judgment and independent views on economic questions.
    • Advance the breadth and depth of CSR economic analysis by contributing original frameworks and technological skills.
    • In time, participate in CSR's outreach efforts (e.g. with clients) and develop a personal network of economic/policy experts whose insights can benefit CSR and the broad Investment Group.
  • Qualifications

    • You have a demonstrated passion for economics, for answering economic questions that are pertinent to investors and strong desire to build a career as a buy-side economist;
    • You have a master's degree in economics, OR;
    • You have a Bachelor's degree in economics supplemented by up to 3 years' work experience in applied economics or research, at a financial institution or in a policy setting
    • You have experience applying econometric, quantitative and data science techniques to economic questions, programming experience (with R/Python or other coding languages)
    • You have a creative and inquisitive mindset, ability to "think outside the box" to solve problems
    • You possess strong verbal and written communication skills
    • You have a willingness to formulate and defend independent views
    • You are team- and customer-oriented; keen to share resources with colleagues and to embrace the unstructured goal to "be useful" to the Investment Group
    • You have the ability to incorporate feedback to continually improve outcomes
    • You demonstrate flexibility to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
