    The Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) team is looking for a talented ESG Data Specialist to help drive the evolution of responsible investing at Capital Group. This is a fantastic opportunity for an ESG data expert to shape how CG's 300+ investment professionals, incorporate ESG insights into their investment processes.

    You will help support Capital's view on the critical and evolving landscape of ESG data and remain abreast of our investment professionals' ESG data needs and the most appropriate solutions to address them. You will explore the marketplace and build tools to ensure that our investments are informed by best-in-class ESG data, that we are on the leading edge of ESG integration, and that we are well positioned to communicate our responsible investment approaches to key internal and external stakeholders. You partner closely with the ESG Data Senior Specialist and with our Investment Group Technology team as they build out the tools investment professionals will use to identify and assess ESG risks and opportunities. You will use your knowledge of data structuring, analysis, validation, and documentation to advance ESG integration as a major strategic priority across CG.

    RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

    • Inform ESG Data Strategy
      • Responsible for staying abreast of CG's evolving ESG investment data needs, awareness of how our current data meets those needs, evolving market capabilities, client expectations and gaps to address
      • Identify and address strategic limitations of ESG data (e.g. missing data treatment policy, data quality criteria for inclusion in pieces of CG ESG IP)
      • Use data-driven approaches (e.g. back-test analysis, qualitative research) and proprietary eligibility and research frameworks to inform the right ESG data strategy for CG. Help develop the narrative on how CG's approach to ESG data allows us to uniquely serve clients
      • Identify and assess new data sources to integrate into CG's ESG Data and Tech platform
      • Produce clear and concise data needs documents (e.g. data specifications, user stories, vision). Use these documents to define what our ESG Data and Tech platform partners need to build. Make smart trade-offs (time vs. effort vs. data features to serve up)
    • Serve as Internal Expert on ESG Data
      • Partner across ESG team, Investment Group Technology, and other key stakeholders to provide insight on the data we have access to, methodologies, limitations, rationale for selection, and appropriate use cases.
        • Formal internal trainings
        • Point of contact for ongoing capacity-building and discrete projects
      • Support data through the entire lifecycle starting from how to source to how it will be displayed in the platform.
      • Manage in-house data documentation and communicate the ESG business requirements clearly to technical team.
      • Partner with investment professional colleagues and Quantitative Research and Analytics team to pilot innovative use cases for incorporating proprietary insight based on ESG data into investment processes
      • Anticipate, understand and develop scalable solutions for client reporting needs.
      • Identify data solutions to ad-hoc portfolio manager / analyst / client requests (exposure to controversies, carbon foot-printing of portfolio, extent of ESG integration in portfolio)
  • Qualifications

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 3-4 years of experience as an analyst in the data space
    • Expertise in the nuances of specific sustainability-related datasets
    • Ability to interpret, clean and manipulate data
    • Ability to work with large amounts of data (thousands of data fields). Adept at data manipulation and cleaning. Also in the absence of data, can drive clarity through test and learn approaches (e.g. serve data, measure impact, learn, adjust approach)
    • Experience in data documentation
    • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in engineering/computer science field
    • Experienced SQL user; Proficiency with other programming languages would be a plus

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Familiarity with ESG data vendors
    • Ability to earn the trust of stakeholders with varied expectations through a combination of defining real needs, impactful, relevant analysis and clear communication
    • Experience partnering with investors to translate sustainability information into investment-relevant insights
    • Evidence of continuous learning and adapting to new technologies
    • Demonstrated ability to coordinate projects across functional teams, including engineering, design, product and the investment group
    • Handles ambiguity (e.g. business approach not defined, delivers with limited guidance)
