Intern, Dynamics of Protected Area Governance Location: United States- Arlington, VA Job Code: 1024 # of openings: 1 Description INTERN, DYNAMICS OF PROTECTED AREA GOVERNANCE Conservation International (CI) has been protecting nature for the benefit of all for over 30 years. Through science, policy, and partnerships, CI is helping build a healthier, more prosperous and more productive planet. POSITION SUMMARY: National parks and other protected areas (PAs) are the foundation of global efforts to conserve biological diversity. Although conservation policy and practice assume that PAs are permanent fixtures on the landscape, protected area downgrading, downsizing, and degazettement (PADDD) is widespread. To advance scientific understanding and inform conservation decision-making, our team has been identifying and documenting PADDD events and causes; analyzing spatial patterns and temporal trends; and quantifying PADDD impacts on natural capital and ecosystem services. Review of applications will begin on March 26, 2018 RESPONSIBILITIES: The Social Science team at CI seeks a self-motivated and creative intern to support and advance the PADDD research initiative. The successful candidate will document and analyze: * Current status of proposed PADDD events * Reversed PADDD decisions and proposals * PAs affected by multiple PADDD events * Regulatory and spatial PADDD offsets In addition, the successful candidate conducts exploratory analysis to understand the patterns, trends, and enabling conditions associated with reversed PADDD events. Project outputs will include a spatial database, maps, graphs, statistical analyses, and power point presentation. We will also help you develop masters project or thesis topic based the work. WORKING CONDITIONS: * Typical office environment. QUALIFICATIONS: Required * Graduate student in the social sciences, natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, or related field. * Familiarity with ArcGIS. * Experience with data management. * Strong qualitative and quantitative research skills. * Familiarity with biodiversity conservation in developing countries. Preferred: * Foreign language skills. * Experience with EndNote or other reference management software. * Interest to use this project as part of a thesis.
