    Job Description

    At Guardant Health, we are committed to positively and significantly improving patient health with technology breakthroughs that address long-standing unmet needs in oncology. As the leader in the field of liquid biopsy, Guardant Health has collected cancer genomic data from over 100,000 patients. We are using bioinformatics and machine learning techniques to extract signals from these data and are developing a liquid biopsy assay to detect early-stage cancer. We are looking for a bioinformatics intern to join us in this endeavor. The successful candidate will work at the forefront of research and technological development within the interdisciplinary LUNAR team and will make core contributions to evolving products designed to have clinical impact on patients.

    The intern position is with the bioinformatics group and will work on developing computational models for the early cancer screening product (LUNAR2). The major responsibilities are

    • Develop and analyze performance of novel statistical models

    • Provide written documentation and specifications for transparency and reproducibility

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Experienced with statistical models for genomic and/or epigenomic data

    • Proficiency with a high-level scripting language (Python/R; Python preferred)

    • Proficiency with Linux command-line and version control tools (git and GitHub)

    • Familiar with high-performance computing infrastructures (e.g., SGE, AWS, Spark)

    PREFERRED

    • Graduating within 2 years

    • Experience in analyzing public genomic/epigenomic datasets (e.g. TCGA, ENCODE)

    • Cancer biology background

    • Ability to build reproducible and well-written code (or packages) for data analysis

    EDUCATION:

    Must be currently enrolled in a PhD program in computational biology/bioinformatics, genomics, machine learning, or related fields. Juniors and graduating seniors are strongly  encouraged to apply.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Employee may frequently exert up to 20-50 pounds of force to push or lift equipment
    • This position requires standing/walking/crawling regularly

    Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment.  Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment.  Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
