    Job Description

    The summer intern position will be part of the Bioinformatics Algorithm development team working on improved variant calling methods based on Guardant’s database of tens of thousands of cell-free DNA samples. You will be working on C++ codebase to extract features from NGS data that will contribute to new Biomarkers as well as better quality control of overall workflow. You will then integrate some of these new functionalities into our Python codebase to allow other scientists to easily reproduce and expand on these features. You will have an opportunity to interact with experienced scientists and other interns, and learn about the intricacies of liquid biopsy assays, sources of noise, and clinically relevant signals. 

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Understand the features that we would like to extract, and modify the C++ code base to extract these features

    • Document all code and be willing to update existing documentation.

    • Work under supervision of Senior Computational Biologists.

    • Bring a can-do attitude to solve new and challenging problems in a high-pace environment.

    • Be able to present updates orally, write reports and updates, and participate in technical discussions.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Must be proficient with coding in C++ and Python

    • Must have experience working with NGS data (BAM/SAM file formats, samtools, bedtools, IGV)

    • Must have strong analytical and problem solving skills

    • Experience with variant calling from NGS data is a plus

    • Familiarity with cfDNA and liquid biopsy is a plus

    • Candidates with experience working in HPC environment are preferred

    • Familiarity with machine learning and cloud computing is a plus

     

    EDUCATION: 

    • Student pursuing Masters or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Applied Mathematics or related field. Juniors and graduatign seniors encouraged to apply.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Employee may frequently exert up to 20-50 pounds of force to push or lift equipment
    • This position requires standing/walking/crawling regularly

    Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment.  Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment.  Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
