To enable Guardant Health to fight cancer through data, the Screening Team is seeking a highly motivated Summer Intern – Bioinformatics to join our team to explore and develop new methods for cancer detection. At Guardant Health, you will be at the forefront of using bioinformatics to improve patient care. You will interact with a diverse team of biologists, data engineers, software engineers, and bioinformaticians to develop statistical models in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Working under the supervision of Senior Bioinformatics Scientists, you will:
  • Work with large datasets comprised of thousands of samples 
  • Brainstorm, analyze, and explore novel bioinformatic machine learning methods for early cancer detection
  • Examine the interplay between distinct analytes and methods
  • Further develop your statistical modeling and simulation skills
  • Learn and develop skills in experimental design

Qualifications

• Strong statistical foundation
• Experience in python or R; python preferred
• Experience working with genomic, expression, or epigenomic data
• Familiarity with standard data science packages (eg scipy stack/dplyr + lme4) and plotting packages (seaborn/ggplot)
• Familiarity with standard data-science techniques (eg pca, clustering, etc.)
• Familiarity with a linux command line environment

PREFERRED:

• Clean coder
• Cancer biology, cancer epigenetics, inherited genetics, or inherited epigenetics background
• 3rd year of PhD or later
• Experience with git or other version control
• Experience with high-performance computing infrastructure (e.g. SGE, SLURM, AWS)

Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment. Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
