    Job Description

    About the Role:

    The Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist (CGMBS) Trainee will train and operate in the Clinical Laboratory under direct and constant supervision of the laboratory director or appropriately licensed and delegated individuals when performing high complexity laboratory testing on patient specimens, performing quality control and quality assurance procedures, and complying with all applicable local, state and federal laboratory requirements. The CGMBS Trainee will train with additional departments for supporting activities of the Clinical Laboratory. The CGMBS Trainee will receive mentorship and training so that they may acquire the qualities needed by a laboratory professional to function at the highest level in the Clinical Laboratory.

    The nature of the work requires excellent attention to detail, effective written and verbal communication skills, the ability to multitask and be flexible with tasks and schedules, and the ability to work independently in a team environment.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    Under the direct and constant supervision by the laboratory director or appropriately licensed individual:

    • Perform laboratory tests, procedures and analyses according to the laboratory’s standard operating procedures;
    • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot equipment according to the laboratory’s standard operating procedures;
    • Assist Trainer in reviewing, interpreting and reporting patient results in LIMS as assigned;
    • Assist Trainer in identifying and troubleshooting high complexity problems that adversely affect the test performance;
    • Perform, review and document laboratory quality control procedures;
    • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the established performance specifications;
    • Perform and document routine preventive maintenance;
    • Prepare reagents required for testing;
    • Perform and document reagent qualification per the approved protocols;
    • Communicate effectively with coworkers and non-laboratory personnel;
    • Perform other laboratory duties as assigned; and
    • Report all concerns of test quality and/or safety to the Laboratory Supervisor, Laboratory Director or Safety Officer.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Must be accepted into the CGMBS Training Program with San Jose State University;
    • Must possess a valid California CGMBS Trainee License;
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Biomedical Laboratory Science, Clinical Science or related field preferred;
    • Guardant Health Clinical Laboratory experience or equivalent high complexity and volume laboratory experience preferred;
    • Laboratory experience within the last year preferred; and
    • Experience with molecular biology techniques preferred.

    Work Environment:

    • Hours and days may vary depending on operational needs;
    • Standing or sitting for long periods of time may be necessary;
    • May be exposed to hazardous materials, blood specimens and instruments with moving parts, heating or freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation;
    • Repetitive manual pipetting may be necessary; and
    • Some lifting (up to 25 pounds) may be necessary.

    Delegated Duties and Responsibilities:

    CGMBS Trainee is responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results and under the direct and constant supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) must:

    • Perform only those high complexity tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual’s education, training or experience and technical abilities;
    • Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results;
    • Ensure that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens;
    • Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed;
    • Follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable level of performance;
    • Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and must either correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Clinical Consultant, or Laboratory Director;
    • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications; and
    • Report all concerns of test quality and/or safety to a Supervisor, Laboratory Director or Safety Officer.

    Additional Information

    For positions based in Palo Alto, CA or Redwood City, CA, the hourly range for this full-time position is $28.84 to $38.94 . The range does not include benefits and, if applicable, overtime, bonus, commission, or equity.

    Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including, but not limited to, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.     Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment. Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
