This position is part time and limited duration of approximately two to three months. Rate of pay is based on skill, ability and experience $14.25-$20.21. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Cleans, lubricates, and maintains machines, tools, and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter; observes and listens to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunction and determine need for adjustment or repair. Working in a team environment, operates machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts; fits and assembles machined parts into complete units. Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and set up requirements. Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools. Lays out and verifies dimensions of parts. Confers with other machinists to resolve machining problems and challenges to meeting production goals. Performs other tasks related to the work and as assigned by the Machinist Supervisor. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: machine shop theory and procedures; tools and equipment used in the course of the work; numbers, and basic math skills. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Current enrolled or recently completed a program in machining. High School Diploma/GED with demonstrated proficiency in Reading, Writing and Math. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands for this position require continual standing, walking and using fine motor skills for the operation of tools and machinery. May require some lifting or assistance with heavy equipment. Occasionally requires twisting, turning, bending, climbing, and walking over uneven surfaces. The work is performed inside a shop in which machines are continually running generating varying degrees of noise; the facility may be subject to varying temperatures. Work involves use of chemicals, acids, greases, solvents, petroleum and vapors and fumes. WORK ENVIRONMENT: ESSENTIAL WORKING CONDITIONS 1. Works indoors: Frequently- Works indoors disassembling and reassembling the machinery. 2. Works outdoors: Frequently- Exposed to outdoor weather when moving between shipyard and on-board work site. 3. Safety equipment required: Follow PPE requirements. 4. Other Exposures: Exposed to smoke, acids, degreasing cleaners, fumes, free silica, dust, paints, solvents, oils, grease, epoxy. 5. Operation of equipment, tools, and/or vehicles: Uses hand and power tools, wrenches, comealong, sledge, portapower air tools, dial indicators and other measuring instruments, 1 ½ ton to 6 ton capacity com-a-longs, slugging wrenches, mauls, hydraulic port-a-powers, forklifts, high lifts, ¼ inch to 2 ½ inch shackles and wire rope.
