  • Responsibilities

    Round Lake Camp is a sleep away camp based on an inclusion model for campers aged 7-17 with learning differences, ADHD, anxiety and social communication disorders. Our campers share all the facilities and programming with Nah-Jee-Wah and Cedar Lake Camps at NJY Camps so that all campers have the same opportunities and choices. All traditional camp programs are provided such as swimming, sports, adventure courses, arts, STEM etc. In addition, OT, speech and academic supports are available for those who qualify.

    As a general counselor you become a most significant member of the camp team designed to offer support and direction to the campers. While specialist counselors run specific activities throughout the day, a general counselor focuses on camper care and supports the day-to-day operations of a respective group at camp.

    Responsibilities

    • Accompany campers to activities to foster engagement and ensure appropriate supervision Assist campers with socialization and friendships with peers
    • Participate with and encourage campers in their daily activities in order to develop confidence and independence
    • Help campers to develop problem solving skills
    • Support camp leadership in day-to-day operations including event planning, out of camp trips, and general camper health & well-being

    Learning Opportunities

    • Learn from seasoned professionals in fields ranging from social work and child development, to education and recreation
    • Gain knowledge about different diagnoses Learn strategies to manage different camper situations
    • Receive practical experience of inclusion model
    • Develop your skill-set through individual evaluations and weekly staff trainings
  • Qualifications
    • Experience and/or willingness and curiosity to work with children with special needs
    • Demonstrates traits of a positive role model for campers
    • Mature and able to handle complex camper-related challenges with supports of supervisor if needed Degree in related field is preferred but not required
