YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Deere equipment, combines, sugar cane harvesters, etc., use airflow to clean and convey crop and other material in the machines.  You will work on modeling the interaction between air and crop material using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element modeling (DEM).
• You will model the aerodynamics of particles (crop) to predict lift and drag. Explore using the approaches being developed at ISU, for instance immersogeometric analysis.  This project work will help Deere improve the accuracy of our models and thus increase the performance of our machines.
• You will use CFD and DEM to support ongoing projects in wear prediction, automated modeling, and wind tunnel tests.

WHAT IT TAKES

• Interest in numerical methods and computer simulation
• Experience with CFD or DEM analysis tools or other simulation tools (for example Fluent, Star CCM+, Open FOAM, EDEM, LIGGGHTS, or others)
• Ideal Background:  Graduate student, experience with advanced simulation methods like immersogeometric analysis; Background in aerodynamics or fluid dynamics
• Interest in numerical methods and computer simulation
• Engineering student in Mechanical, Aero, or Agricultural Engineering
• Must be registered as a full-time student at Iowa State University
• Must be able to commute to the work location on a daily basis
• Cumulative GPA of 2.8/3.0 or above
• 16 - 20 hours/week during the academic year
• 35 - 40 hours/week during the summer semester
