    Undergraduate Intern / Co-op Program Overview-

    • 3-to-6-month intern / co-op within a functional area of MKS Instruments that provides students a comprehensive and engaging experience from before your program starts to after the program ends.

    Through our partnership with UMass Lowell, we are looking for an exceptional Plasma Engineering Intern who can provide technical support in the analysis, design, and testing of advanced breakthrough technologies in the areas of remote plasma sources, reactive gas generators, flow and pressure measurement. The person must be able to work independently with limited supervision in a fast-paced, dynamic, highly technical environment and work on multiple concurrent cross-functional projects. A successful candidate must be highly self-motivated and hands-on with a can-do mentality. Excellent understanding of chemistry and applied physics, with an emphasis on RF plasma systems and vacuum technology as well as exposure to fluid dynamics, applied electrodynamics, numerical analysis techniques, and laboratory experimental methods are highly desirable.

    • Work with a senior scientist to characterize the performance and behavior of various plasma sources for a variety of manufacturing and industrial applications.
    • Design and set up test benches, perform experiments, collect, and analyze data to achieve project objectives with an emphasis on plasma-materials interaction, product characterization, and reliability tests.
    • Identify and troubleshoot problems in prototypes.
    • Interface with product engineering and cross-functional teams as required.

    What will you bring to the team, along with your inquisitiveness:

    • Applicants must be enrolled as students at UMass Lowell.
    • Enrollment in a program specializing in Materials Science, Physics, or Engineering. BS in these areas is desired but not required.
    • Familiarity with semiconductor processing and hands-on skills in an R&D laboratory are desired.
    • Basic understanding of plasma chemistry/physics, materials chemistry, materials processing, thin film and coating principles. Strong analytical capability is a must.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Must be versed in using MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint and Word)
    • Proficiency with MATLAB desirable.
    • Qualified candidates should be US Persons.
