    Job Description

    The Smart Packaging Engineer, Food/CPG will be focused on solving how to integrate digital triggers into existing food packaging materials.  The position sits within the Innovation function of Avery Dennison Smartrac, with a focus on the food/CPG segment.   The position requires a deep knowledge of food or consumer packaging (preferably plastic films, caps, folding cartons) - from packaging material manufacture to inline product conversion/filling.  This person will form relationships and collaborate with existing packaging producers to understand how to integrate smart technology into existing manufacturing processes.  This will involve collaboration with the Avery Dennison Smartrac R&D team and external packaging manufacturers.  The ideal candidate will be naturally curious, able to think creatively, and be comfortable in an ambiguous environment.  

    ACTIVITIES MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

    • Applies existing experience in structural food packaging (both manufacturing processes and equipment) and recommends ideal places to integrate inlays into the process. Will be responsible for understanding the food packaging production process - both at the packaging supplier and at manufacturer, focus on flexible packaging (pouches and films) and rigid closures.
    • Coordinates with R&D and PLM teams to design appropriate inlays for easy integration into the packaging processes to enable smart packaging.
    • Advises external partners on integration of inlay/sensor insertion
    • Develops partnerships and builds relationships with external food/CPG packaging companies.
    • Helps to develop equipment for inlay insertion on a wide variety of packing products (paper, flexible films, rigid plastic, etc) 
    • Recommends and implements process improvements and/or modifications to meet quality standards.
    • Determines packaging specifications according to the nature of the product, cost limitations, legal requirements, and the type of protection required, considering need for resistance to such external variables as moisture, corrosive chemicals, temperature variations, light, heat, rough handling, food contact, and tampering. 
    • Investigates and resolves work-in-process problems during new product introduction, as well as customer projects .
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Packaging, Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing or Chemical Engineering; or related discipline

    • 4-6 years of experience in structural food or CPG packaging

    • 2-3 years of experience in managing external relationships

    • Good understanding of structural food/CPG packaging manufacturing processes and equipment, including familiarity with food/CPG packaging or food/CPG manufacturing environments

    • Good verbal and written skills. Ability to interface with cross-functional groups to define and execute overall requirements.

    • Good organization and attention to detail

    • Experience with plastic packaging and vacuum sealed films - is preferred but not required.

    • RFID or smart packaging related industry experience is a plus.

    • Experience in packaging sustainability / recyclability is a plus.

    • Creative thinker and comfortable working in an ambiguous environment.

    • Travel 25-50%

    The salary range for this position is $80000 - $115000 / year.
