    Job Description

    As Head of Health Equity, Research, Development and Medical (RDM), a Senior Director level position, you will be a change agent who creates a unifying vision and strategy for Biogen leadership in health equity from a scientific and medical perspective – working with key stakeholders across the organization to assure they are maintained. This person will help embed health equity principles into all aspects of RDM work, ensuring that Biogen’s data are representative of different patient profiles and any relevant activities support a more equitable lens. In addition, the incumbent in this role will build capabilities to address scientific and medical inequities across the ecosystem, including all aspects of drug development and leveraging regulatory and other federal policies that foster more equitable healthcare delivery. This person will join a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment committed to successful health equity research that results in clinically meaningful and actionable results. This role has significant internal and external influence (working cross-functionally with leaders in RDM and other functions as applicable) and is vital to positioning Biogen as an industry leader in this area over time.

    What You’ll Do

    This position will help:

    • Build a multi-year strategy with clear deliverables, accountabilities, and measures of success, spanning across R&D (including Medical)
    • Establish infrastructure and stakeholder relationships necessary to foster a culture of sustainable implementation and execution of the health equity strategy
    • Work with therapeutic area leaders to develop a framework for health equity that focuses on addressing gaps in data across patient profiles
    • Drive cross-functional collaborations to implement the health equity framework, aiming to better understand disease pathophysiology across different patient profiles and patient journeys in the areas of focus for Biogen
    • Serve as representative to project teams (one per therapeutic area), responsible for health equity plans
    • Lead health equity action at Biogen in collaboration with relevant functional experts across the company to support core corporate and program strategy
    • Deepen insights in all areas of health equity through data generation and education (scientific and medical)
    • Collaborate with key experts to develop tools to measure and equitably improve quality at clinical care sites using a health equity lens
    • Engage advisors on opportunities to enhance Biogen leadership in the area of health equity
    • Broaden employee understanding and ownership of health equity in their day-to-day roles, encouraging them to learn quickly and build for the long-term

    External to Biogen, the role will also:

    • Build relationships to advance Biogen’s leadership in health equity across the ecosystem.
    • Lead a network of partners employing Biogen data for health equity research and intervention development
    • Engage as a data-driven health equity expert with relevant stakeholders on key areas: life-science partners, federal agencies, academia, and other entities.

    Biogen is looking for a Health Equity expert with:

    • An advanced scientific (PhD, SciD) or medical (MD, MD/PhD, DO, PharmD) degree
    • 12-15+ years of progressive work experience within the life sciences, combination of drug development and clinical or medical research in healthy equity strongly preferred.
    • Established record of contributing to health equity research and related activities, leading some or all aspects
    • A deep understanding of data generation relevant for research, development, and clinical care, including the strengths and limitations of electronic health records (EHR) and other data sources relevant to health equity research
    • Comprehensive understanding of issues impacting quality healthcare experiences for patients in the areas of focus for Biogen
    • A demonstrated leader who thrives on building programs and working collaboratively leading teams towards a shared goal, with demonstrated ability to partner at all levels and within all functions of a complex matrix organization to drive long term strategy and deliver on short-term goals
    • A problem solver who brings different and creative ways of seeing the world and solving problems and who has a long-term vision; comfortable challenging the status quo and leading through ambiguity
    • An established external network leveraged to create sustainable solutions with Biogen playing a role
    • Excellent oral and written skills needed for rigorous strategy development and implementation

    Additional Information

    This position is approved for remote or hybrid hiring across the United States. The base compensation range for this role is $189,400 to $315,400. Base salary is determined by a combination of factors including, but not limited to, job related years of relevant experience, internal equity, and location of the job. Additionally, this role is eligible for participation in Biogen’s LTI grants and other incentive programs.
