    Job Description

    This is for a 12-week internship position from June - August 2020

    The intern will be supporting Global Procurement Technical Operations team. This team is responsible for procuring goods and services for multiple categories include Research & Development, Worldwide Medical, Technical Development, Engineering, Facilities, etc.   

    The intern will work with experienced sourcing managers to learn about multiple spend categories and have full responsibility for assigned projects. The intern will have the opportunity to: 

    • Learn about Biogen culture through participating in Biogen hosted events (patient testimonials, therapeutic area presentations, other intern-program events) 
    • Insights into Biotech industry through supplier and contract analysis 
    • Increased knowledge of Procurement role: understand how to optimize quality and cost while enhancing customer focus, innovation and relationship management 
    • Enhanced transferable skills: data analysis, particularly spend and pricing analysis

     

    Position Description & Project Responsibility 

    SPEND ANALYTICS CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT: Review and improve spend categorization in Biogen’s spend analytics tool 

    • Assist Category Managers to understand categories’ scope and vendors 
    • Work with Finance on understanding Oracle coding by category 
    • Work with Spend Analytics team and external vendor to understand how categories and vendors are structured/assigned to categories 
    • Based on guidance from Category Managers, review invoices as necessary to determine appropriate category mapping 
    • Develop service and vendor-based rules to improve “mapping” of how spend will continue to be assigned to appropriate categories and collaborate with Analytics team to implement 
    • Based on analysis of spend mapping, present observations and recommend actions for top 10-20 categories/vendors for spend consolidation/tail spend management opportunities

     

    CATEGORY MANAGEMENT PLAYBOOK SUPPORT: Support project leads in the early phases of the Category Management Playbook development 

    • Interview category managers and collect inventory of existing category management tools and frameworks 
    • Assist project leads in assessment and classification of existing tools/frameworks  
    • Categorize existing tools/frameworks by Category Management phase and create a SharePoint site to load all existing tools for easy reference 
    • Support project leads in the development of project plan for the Category Management Playbook workstream

     

    CONTRACT MANAGEMENT:  

    • Leverage information from spend analysis and revised categorization, identify list of contracts for validation and re-categorization (files uploaded to tool, assigned to correct category, update link to master/amendments, accurate contract expiration, etc.) 
    • Work with Contract Management team and leverage standard reporting functionality to develop standard category-specific dashboards for proactive contract management (expiration/renewal, new amendments/SOWs, etc.)

      

    SOURCING OPPORTUNITIES: 

    • Learn the contract negotiation process, how to interpret agreement terms and conditions to ensure lowest possible risk and best value terms for Biogen 
    • Learn how to analyze data to determine spending patterns/trends, and opportunities for increasing value, reducing costs and driving efficiencies 
    • Support the development, implementation, and refinement of global sourcing strategies that result in enhanced value, revenue, breakthrough total-cost reduction and continuous improvement.

    Qualifications

    To participate in the Biogen Intern Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria: 

    • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. 
    • Grade point average of 3.2 or higher preferred 
    • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date 
    • Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university

     

    Additional Qualifications:

    • Strong oral and written communications skills 
    • Strong Analytical skills - ability to analyze and interpret data to recommend effective strategies  
    • Organizational skills, with the ability to shift priorities and manage changing demands with a sense of urgency  
    • A customer service attitude and perspective 
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access, Word and PowerPoint (ideally also Visio) 
    • Procurement experience a plus.

     

    EDUCATION 

    • Undergraduate student completed at least two years of program 
    • Desired majors include: Business, Finance, Supply Chain, or equivalent.

    • Cambridge, MA
