These conditions are often inherited, difficult to diagnose, progressively debilitating and have few, if any, treatment options. BioMarin will continue to focus on advancing therapies that are the first or best of their kind. -Intern Project Description The Formulation intern will be responsible for assessing feasibility of freeze-drying (lyophilizing) one of BioMarins drug product candidate. Following appropriate training and under necessary supervision, the candidate will conduct laboratory studies to help develop a lyophilization process for a drug product. The work will entail various drug product operations (such as filling, filtration, component sterilization etc.) and use of a freeze-drier to evaluate lyophilization processes and characterization of the resulting lyophilized drug products using various analytical methods. -Ideal candidate is a student pursuing either a B.S. or M.S degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering -Qualification/Requirements -At minimum candidate should be enrolled in second (sophomore) year of undergraduate study at the time of application. -Strong written and verbal communication skills -Ability to summarize and present study results -Familiarity with Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook -Result driven and adaptable individual who enjoys dynamic work environment -Work Environment/ Physical Demands -The intern is required to work in an environment where knowledge of fundamental laboratory skills is required -The intern will interact with hiring manager, Formulation Development group members as well as the summer interns from other BioMarin departments. The intern may also interact with personnel from pre-Formulation, Analytical Chemistry and Quality Control groups. -Skills the Intern will gain: -Insight of Formulation groups contributions to the drug development process -Overview of lyophilization process and hands on experience using a freeze-drier (lyophilizer) -Knowledge of various analytical tools to evaluate quality of freeze-dried products such as moisture content, appearance, reconstitution time, pH, and Osmolality. -Skills in experiment set-up, data interpretation and presentation of experimental findings to a scientific audience -Work Schedule: -40 hours/week
