Technical Service & Development (TS&D;) Lab Technician The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting job opportunity as a Technical Service & Development (TS&D) Lab Technician in Auburn Hills, MI. This job is to support new and existing products for selected customers and capitalize on additional value growth opportunities. TS&D provides technical support and testing of our adhesives product line. In addition, TS&D assists R&D in the development of products. In this role, the individual will be responsible for the preparation, testing, and evaluation of samples when qualifying products and substrates. It may also be necessary to use these same skills for problem identification. The candidate will interact with other TS&D personnel on a daily basis. There may also be interaction with sales, marketing, and our external customers. Maintaining professional relationships and technical credibility is essential. Key roles and responsibilities: The candidate will be primarily focused on bonding technology for fixed automotive glass systems and substrates. Work will be done with internal personnel and external customers to evaluate their current and future products and projects. For this job, the candidate will be required to utilize ASTM, SAE, customer, and internal specifications to prepare, test, and analyze new products and substrates. Tests will include mechanical and physical property testing, and some tests will be computer driven. Knowledge of the current adhesives product line, including application, will be essential. When a problem arises, the candidate may be asked to provide the necessary testing. Data may be given verbally, but must be documented in a laboratory book and in the form of a technical report. Testing is expected to be done promptly and efficiently, therefore good organization is essential. The candidate will become familiar with the quality system and must be compliant in their documentation of testing and in their abilities to run a test. This individual may have equipment that must be maintained within the guidelines of the quality system. The candidate will have customer exposure in the form of meetings, training, and testing. Essential Functions: Focus on the current needs of both internal and external customers by providing the necessary testing. Aid in the development of future products in accordance with business strategy. Sample preparation will include applying primers and adhesives to substrates with lab tools, such as caulking guns. Required to run physical/mechanical and adhesion tests such as lap shear (mechanical test) and quick knife (manual test). Preparation and documentation of daily activites are necessary. Approximate time on tasks = 70% of the time. Evaluation of tested samples at your lab bench or desk. Data must be input into a formal technical report for our customers. Approximate time on tasks = 30% of the time. Required Qualifications: A minimum of 2 years relevant lab work experience is required. This includes but is not limited to customer specifications, test methods, data collection, and documentation. Knowledge of mechanical and physical property testing. Good mechanical aptitude and abilities. Familiarity with customer specifications. Understanding of application equipment. Maintenance and troubleshooting equipment problems, when necessary. Goals will be tied to a business strategy. Must have strong multi-tasking, problem solving, and time management skills. A self-starter who can identify, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks. Necessary to take independent action and adhere to set timelines. When appropriate, recommend or initiate further activities. The candidate must understand the importance and have the ability to achieve high quality results and react to changing priorities. Able to work in pressure situations. Look for ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the current products, processes, or services. Identify solutions for new substrates, customers, technology. Good interpersonal skills are required. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to work and help people within the group on projects or with testing. Status of assigned work may need to be given routinely. Alert others when problems arise. Good technical understanding. Ability to learn product lines, customer specifications, and testing quickly. Demonstrate leadership skills - inspire others and lead them through influence. The candidate will serve as a technical mentor for other technologists, is responsible to train new employees, to demonstrate best practices, to increase their level of technical knowledge, to give advice to support for their own development and in partnership with group leader. Shares knowledge with others (i.e. trains others). Engagement in site safety and quality programs. Proper housekeeping of assigned areas. Dispose materials and replenish supplies from storage area. Works proactively to improve the level of safety in R&D, must be an example for others. Local customer travel may be necessary. Overtime may be necessary if the project warrants it. **** **** Preferred Qualifications: Proficient in lab testing and report writing. Project management experience. Proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel, and have the ability to learn new systems quickly. **** **** Education: Associate's degree is required. A Bachelor's degree in a Science related field is preferred.
