    Job Description

    This Shipping Manager role is responsible for providing support to the Operation departments in the Chicago, IL plant.  Activities include: employee relations, recruiting and staffing, performance management, compensation, benefits, diversity, conflict resolution/management, communication, training and HR process coordination, etc. Implement HR policies and procedures.  Ensure HR guidelines, policies and procedures are met to the expectations of the Corporate Office. 

     

     JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Supervise and facilitate the day-to-day activities of team. Utilize knowledge and experience, to provide training to team members on SOPs, SAP transactional reporting, inventory control and process controls. Responsible for individual performance including employee performance reviews, personnel issues and required discipline. Oversee shipment scheduling, material handling issues and equipment maintenance, as well as resolving transactional problems.
    • Continual performance is required for all individuals not receiving a satisfactory score.
    • Provide a communication network between direct reports and middle and upper management. All communications should be professional, respectful and GPI core values meet.
    • Work with employees to maintain a safe work environment. Encourages and leads team members to work in a safe manner and to seek improvement in work practices for their benefit. Develops and implements safety procedures and supports Safety Coordinator in achieving departmental and plant safety goals.
    • Ensures that product quality, production efficiencies and overall productivity meet or exceeds established standards and is directly accountable for expenditures exceeding budgeted levels (OT, detention, additional freight costs). Oversee development and support implementation of continuous improvement programs to reduce shipment errors, meet on time shipments and increase order fill rate year over year metric.
      • Directly involved in responsibilities / actions related to Prerequisite and Food Safety Programs.
    • In the absence of Logistics Manager, daily responsibilities will be transferred to lead, shipping coordinator or Production Control Manager.
    • Metrics to include: handling efficiencies, production downtime waiting for in house raw materials (board, corrugate, pallets, etc.), receiving of incoming materials, inventory accuracy, on time shipments and coordination of material transfers between facilities.
    • Ensure the safety of the employees, facility, and product by tracking, investigating, and reporting incidents and complaints within the department. Participation in at least one safety team, employee completion of safety STOP cards and Summit training.
    • Support Material Handling Team Members with a continuous improvement program for personal and company development by staying abreast of changing technologies, trends, legal and industry changes that could impact us or our customers. Knowledge and application of processes, take times, product flow required.
    • Responsible for the verification of SQF controls and meeting the standards of the SQF requirements.

     

      BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE:

    • The Logistics Manager must be a leader with exceptional communication skills, good organization, and the ability to motivate people to perform at high levels and within established timelines.
    • Production experience is required and continued education is considered a plus. Must be quality conscious, process and customer oriented.

    EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent corresponding job-related experience and education preferred.

     

    SPECIFIC SKILLS:

    • Knowledge and experience in shipping and receiving, warehousing and inventory control
    • Some knowledge of transportation requirements is necessary
