We are looking for a full-time Data Scientist for our headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for collecting, analyzing and validating data and statistics to enable quality and accurate weather data for successful use in Garmin products. Other essential functions include: * Collects large sets of atmospheric and weather data through multiple channels such as NOAA servers and NOAAPORT. * Analyzes existing data collection methods and provides recommended improvements * Explores and refines data handling, storage and processing methods * Validates and filters collected data with software algorithm * Builds models and algorithms with data * Provides technical input to feature development plans and concept documents * Provides significant contributions to defining team roadmap and priorities * Identifies patterns and trends in data * Develops reliable solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity * Provides innovation within area of expertise * Recognized as an expert in assigned discipline at Garmin and applies extensive technical expertise and analysis to initiatives * Researches new technologies and proposes cost effective solutions * Creates new data products and derive information from data * Provides solutions or actionable items from data * Presents analysis results using appropriate visualization tools to stakeholders * Collaborates closely with engineering and development teams * Exemplifies Garmins Mission, Vision, Values, and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmins image and culture Qualified candidates possess a Bachelor of Science Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics or Statistics from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of 2 years relevant industry or research experience in weather data processing OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Other requirements include: * Knowledge of radar theory and principles of meteorology. * Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) * Minimum 2 years of experience with Python and/or Matlab * Demonstrates expert knowledge in data analysis methods and tools * Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills * Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude and work well with others * Driven problem solver with proven success in solving difficult problems * Consistently demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work documentation and organization Desired Qualifications * MS/PhD in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science * Experience with processing dual polarization radar products * Experience with storm modeling and weather data simulation * Experience with atmospheric microphysics * Experience with scientific data formats such as NetCDF * Experience with vertical profiles of weather radar reflectivity * Experience with ingesting NOAAPORT data * C, C++ programming experience * Previous experience with avionics Our benefits are designed to lead an evolving marketplace, support innovation and encourage a healthy balance between work and life.
