  • Responsibilities

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Manages all activities related to the machine shop, and machine shop preventive maintenance program by performing the following duties. Performs leadership duties related to the strategic functions.

     

    JOB TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The following job/task functions have been identified as the core functions of this position. However, the supervisor or manager may assign additional duties associated with this position.

     

    • Manages and prioritizes activities of Machine Shop personnel to meet customer, plant and management requirements

    • Control and minimize labor overtime, premium freight and repair expenses

    • Manages capital asset maintenance

    • Implements and maintains preventive maintenance programs

    • Reviews / inspects orderliness and housekeeping to maintain company standards

    • Performs all duties and operates machinery & equipment according to MIOSHA standards and company procedures using required safety equipment (gloves, sleeves, ear plugs, etc.)

    • Direct, lead, and maintain the team’s 5S excellence and adherence.

    • Review design, cost, and timing to formulate a feasible plan to provide all “make” items efficiently and at the lowest cost.

    • Monitor job labor cost within the Machining Department on a weekly basis and report any overages to the GM.

    • Adheres to established project timelines and provides regular timing / project updates to Leadership utilizing Microsoft Project and / or Office. 

    • Gives direction and approval for revisions to project scope and timing.

    • Monitor/improve quality of machine shop products.

    • Monitor/improve machine shop capacity.

    • Monitor/improve perishable tooling usage.

    • Quote machine work for other plants and follow it through from PO to Delivery.

    • Inspect completed work for conformance to standards.

    • Promote teamwork and show a willingness to work with other departments

    • Participates in continuous improvement activities.

    • Maintains a high level of confidentiality in all duties.

    Required Skills

    MANAGERIAL:

    • Performs all duties and operates machinery & equipment according to MIOSHA standards and company procedures using required safety equipment (gloves, sleeves, ear plugs, etc.)
    • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training associates; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
    • Enforces MIOSHA and company safety regulations

    Responsible for supervision of direct reports, including:

    • CNC Machinist
    • Wire EDM Machinist
    • Technical Trade Program

    Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. 

    Required Experience

    REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from four-year college or university, or 5+ years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education or experience.
    • Programming and basic machine shop experience
    • Extensive machining background or knowledge of machining

     

    REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Responsible for reading and understanding the TS16949 and ISO-14001 procedures
    • CAD specific knowledge
      • Extensive knowledge of surfacing and surface run-off using customer provided math data and designs
      • Ability to import math data from Cadkey and AutoCad software.
    • CAM software knowledge
      • Extensive knowledge of 2D/3D programming for CNC machining
    • FMEA knowledge
      • Basic understanding of process
    • GD&T knowledge
      • A working knowledge of the ANSI Y14.5m standards
      • The ability to apply the ANSI Y14.5m standards to drawings
    • Effective email and electronic communication skills are required
