    JMT is seeking Assistant Resident Engineers to carry out Construction Management and Inspection Services in the New York Metropolitan area. Projects may include both rehabilitation as well as new construction of buildings, rail, marine, dredging, concrete work, paving work, structural, maintenance of traffic, with some electrical, mechanical, environmental plumbing and finishes knowledge. This position may require the ability to stay late or come in early as needed, in addition to night and weekend shift work.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Primarily supervising staff and managing the day to day activities as it relates to Engineering/Construction and administrative/financial matters
    • Reporting to the Sr. Resident Engineer, the Assistant Resident Engineer will be required to have full knowledge and familiarity with contract documents, ensure that construction work is performed in accordance with contract drawings, specifications and all applicable codes and standards
    • Comment on and approve quantities of work in place for payment applications in a timely fashion
    • Ensure that construction is performed in a safe manner and completed on schedule
    • Read and interpret plans and specs and prepare written contract administration documentation such as daily narratives (work reports), special inspection reports, daily time and material records, and document unit price work
    • Identify potential extra work issues and keep the Resident Engineer advised of potential issues
    • Prepare estimates of extra work and related sketches and documentation 
    • Review plans for constructability and prepare comments
    • Review contractor payment requests and provide comments to the Resident Engineer
    • In addition, the ARE will be responsible for managing 2-10 direct reports consisting of Civil/Structural Engineers, Electrical/Mechanical Engineers, Office Engineer and Construction Inspectors
    • The ARE will be responsible for assuring all submittals, schedules, insurance, and other contract requirements are submitted and approved by the responsible stakeholders
    • The ARE shall keep the Resident Engineer informed on all contract discrepancies and differing field conditions
    • The ARE shall chair meetings with contractors, facility personnel, design consultants and other stakeholders
    • The ARE shall be able to stand in for the Resident Engineer as needed

    Required Skills

    • Willingness to learn and an ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written. Verbal communication includes speaking with the Resident Engineer, other contract staff, and facility staff both in person via two way communication

    Required Experience

    • Valid Driver's license required
    • Trained in OSHA 30-hour construction safety
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering is preferred
    • 10 years experience managing construction work, varied in size (projects ranging from $200K to $25 million plus) and complexity (multiple crews and crew sizes per shift) preferred
    • Mechanical, civil, and structural knowledge preferred
    • Professional Engineering license preferred

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work is performed in both an office and field (construction) environment. Office to field time is approximately 25% to 75% respectively. Field work requires climbing, walking and standing at a construction site and may be outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 50 lbs) may be required.
