    About IPSD

    Caterpillar's Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L engines that not only power Caterpillar machines, but also power over 5000 other applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Caterpillar's company strategy includes sustainability as one of four focus areas and IPSD is engaged and actively preparing green energy solutions for the future

    Job Summary:

    We are seeking a motivated and hands-on Experimental Diesel Mechanic Intern. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in experimental engine builds, testing, and mechanical systems integration. The intern will work with experienced mechanics and engineers to support the development and testing of diesel and gaseous fuel engines. This internship is designed to fulfill academic requirements for students currently enrolled in an associate degree program in Experimental Mechanics or a related field.

    What You Will Do:

    • Learn to interpret Pro-E models, VisView models, blueprints, and verbal instructions.
    • Support installation of engines, builds in various stages, including diesel and gaseous fuel engines.
    • Help prepare engines for testing by assisting with assembly and disassembly of engine components
    • Aid in installing test instrumentation such as thermocouples, pressure gauges, and test leads.
    • Observe and assist with adjustments to engine systems (valve train, gear train, fuel, cooling, oil).
    • Participate in the assembly of subassemblies and full engine units.
    • Support installation of engine and test cell of associated piping.
    • Contribute documentation and feedback for improvements in production and protype engine models.
    • Learn how to evaluate engine hardware for reusability.
    • Learn to use precision gauging tools and follow established assembly sequences.
    • Help with engine installation/removal from test cells using appropriate tools and equipment.
    • Participate in team discussions and suggest improvements based on hands-on experience.

    What You Will Have:

    • Must have a safety mindset and the willingness to follow all safety procedures
    • Currently enrolled in an Associate Degree program in Diesel Technology or a related field.
    • Strong interest in mechanical systems, engine testing, and hands-on technical work.
    • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work collaboratively in a team environment.
    • Basic understanding of mechanical tools
    • Willingness to learn and adapt in a dynamic, engineering-focused environment.

    • Hours: Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 3:00PM (Schedule may vary)

    Summary Pay Range:

    $15.00 - $17.50
