The Biocatalysis group within Merck Research Laboratories located in Rahway, NJ, is seeking an undergraduate summer intern. The intern will function as a fully-integrated member of a biocatalysis team, consisting of synthetic and analytical chemists, molecular biologists, engineers, and bioinformaticians. The job will focus on developing novel enzymatic reactions and processes for the synthesis of chiral intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients. The intern will: -Be involved in the discovery and development of novel biocatalytic reactions and their application to synthetic routes of potential drug candidates. -Apply novel screening methods utilizing automation and high-throughput experimentation. -Perform research using techniques in biocatalysis to understand and solve key synthetic challenges for the preparation of drug candidates. -Attend departmental and team meetings to gain a wider perspective on the drug development process in the pharmaceutical industry. -Perform and learn reaction set-up, work-up, and product purification; analytical and preparative chromatography; basic NMR and MS interpretation; and safe lab practices. -Have the opportunity to gain further knowledge and skills via refinement of biocatalysis and organic chemistry skills, introduction to new spectroscopic and purification techniques, exposure to problems in discovery and process research, and perspective on the practical aspects of drug development. The successful candidate will have a chance to interact with cross-functional teams of chemists, biologist and engineers to carry out high-throughput screening of enzyme libraries for selected biotransformations. The intern will have a chance to scale up successful reactions to isolate and characterize reaction products. The intern will be responsible for accurate electronic notebook recording, safe laboratory practices, and presentation of data and their interpretation to a team of scientists. The intern will also attend departmental and team meetings to gain a wider perspective on the drug development process in the pharmaceutical industry. We are seeking intern candidates with a record of strong academic performance, strong communication and teamwork skills, and the ability to work in a cross-functional environment. Location: Rahway, NJ This is a full-time paid internship whereby a weekly stipend will be provided to the student. Housing subsidy is not available as part of this program, and if housing is required by student, it must be funded 100% by the student. FTP2019 FTPMRL2019Qualifications Education: -Required: Candidates must be a currently enrolled undergraduate sophomore, junior, or senior student pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Chemical Biology or a currently enrolled graduate student pursuing a Masters or PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Biology. Required Experience and Skills: -Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to (12) consecutive weeks beginning in May or June of 2019. -Candidates must have completed at least (2) years of studies toward bachelors degree by June 2019. Preferred Experience and Skills: -Candidates should have significant interest in organic chemistry. -Candidates should have basic laboratory skills and research experience, such as: electronic notebook recording, reaction set-up techniques, use of vacuum evaporation devices, purification techniques such as thin-layer chromatography, flash chromatography, HPLC, recrystallization, and distillation, basic workup procedures, basic NMR interpretation, basic MS interpretation, and safe lab practices. -Candidates should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
