The successful postdoctoral research fellow will be part of Mercks Disruptive Chemistry program, specifically in collaboration with Prof. Richmond Sarpong (UC Berkeley). Geographically, the position will be full-time within Discovery Chemistry in Boston. The incumbent fellow will be responsible for the development of new synthetic methods to enable access to novel saturated heterocycles. This role will entail the application of high-throughput experiments for reaction optimization and the identification of ligands and conditions to achieve the synthesis of said architecturally complex heterocycles. The candidate will collaborate across disciplines within MRL and contribute to Mercks external reputation through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. The successful fellow must have excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: -Leading the invention and optimization of new methods and catalysts for the preparation of saturated bridged nitrogen heterocycles. -Learning and applying state-of-the-art chemistry techniques, including high-throughput experimentation (HTE) and design of experiments (DoE), to problem solve and quickly drive innovations in CH and CC functionalization. -Presenting ideas and results in both Merck internal and external venues (conferences). -Collaborating and communicating effectively with Prof. Sarpong and the Sarpong Group to maximize a robust and successful partnership. -Networking with colleagues across Merck Chemistry, and working effectively with adjacent functional areas, such as analytical chemistry and modeling and informatics. mrlpostdoc Qualifications Education Minimum Requirement: -A PhD with less than (3) years of postdoctoral experience OR graduating with a PhD by summer of 2019.Required Experience and Skills: -Experience of all techniques associated with modern organic synthetic chemistry, including the synthesis, purification, and characterization of chemical compounds on small and medium scale. -Strong leadership, student mentorship, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills. -Proven ability to independently design experiments, interpret data, and incorporate data into new experimental designs leading to successful experimental outcomes. -Independent, science-based, and innovative thinking, and the ability to mine scientific literature and databases. -Functions well within multidisciplinary teams, and possesses outstanding oral and written communication skills. Preferred Experience and Skills: -Experience in the field of catalysis and reaction optimization, possibly in enantioselective catalysis and organometallic chemistry. -Strong history of publication in peer-reviewed journals. -Demonstrated aptitude for learning & adopting new software, tools, and technologies. -Anticipates the need for contingencies where relevant, and plans alternative strategies as a means for risk management.
