    OPPORTUNITY: We are a Foodservice cup forming manufacturing operation seeking candidates to join our Shelbyville, Illinois team. THIS JOB POSTING IS FOR A LEAD OPERATOR APPRENTICE - EXTRUSION. PAY BEGINS AT $20.37 / HOUR, PROGRESSING TO $21.65 / HOUR AFTER 18 MONTHS, PLUS $0.75 NIGHT SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL.     JOB SUMMARY: Perform all tasks required to set up, operate, and maintain the extruder. Duties include ordering paper, verifying scheduling, loading paper rolls, panel operation, unloading produced rolls, preparing for shutdowns and startups, performing changeovers, maintaining daily production reports, trouble-shooting problems, monitoring and flagging quality conditions of rolls produced, working in a safe manner and obeying all safety rules. Understand and align business operations through execution of the role, exceeding customer expectations and aligning with GPI business, cultural, financial and operational objectives.

     

    JOB FUNCTIONS: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following.

        • Perform all duties in a safe and productive manner.

        • Ensure production and distribution of products are consistent with established food safety, sanitation and quality standards
        • Order rolls from warehouse to support daily production schedule. Verify rolls staged are consistent with current paper specification sheet for scheduled production.
        • Verify proper data is entered in the computer for current production at start of each shift for Delta 2
        • Stage rolls by pushing, removing bands, removing core plugs, cutting off roll I.D. tickets, removing outer wraps and indicating number of wraps cut, checking rolls for correct size and basis weight.
        • Load rolls and move to machine unwind position to load rolls onto machine, apply splice glue, tape, and align new roll to match expiring roll position.
        • After splice is made, cut off remaining wrap on expired core and record number on roll report.
        • Monitor control panel and quality constantly, adjust and correct the extruder to produce quality rolls, proper line, adhesion, and coat weights. Respond to alarms and take corrective action.
        • Inspect and/or replace Teflon belts
        • Monitor and correct edge trim at all times
        • Input new recipes into computer and adjust deckle setting on the dies.
        • Verify support equipment is operating properly (flame treaters, water pumps, chillers, trim exhaust, corona treater, coat weight scanner, gravimetric hoppers, etc.).
        • Adjust extruder operating parameters to produce rolls of good quality (dyne level, adhesion, profile, flat edges, no edge trim or missing poly).
        • Monitor the Whitlock system to keep surge bin full and draw resin from proper silo. Monitor floor rates to extruder hoppers to keep from running out of resin.
        • Watch each splice from unwind to rewind. Adjust trim knives as needed. E-stop machine in case of web breaks, wrap-ups, splice misses, machine faults.
        • Record all downtime reasons in the Delta Log Book and on turnover sheet
        • Run orders in accordance with scheduled and perform adjustments to extrusion dies and computer when required by changeovers. Verify profile scanner, Teflon belts, and flame treater deckles have been adjusted for changeover. Track line and verify web is centered before start-up. Maintain line and surrounding area in a clean condition, removing paper and plastic as required.
        • Monitor and flag quality conditions of roll as it is being rewound. Rework any rejected rolls during shift
        • Keep trim waste carts emptied and trim collection station blower tube operating
        • Unload rolls, record lineal feet, attach roll I.D. ticket, mount core on shaft, load shaft to ready position on machine, prepare string cut-off, and send good rolls to Warehouse.
        • Place poly logs in racks for warehouse pick-up at the end of shift
        • Complete daily paperwork and computer production reports
        • Perform minor maintenance repairs and required adjustments for proper machine operation
        • Once qualified, instruct and train others, including other lead operator apprentices.
        • Manage workload as necessary to ensure production requirements are met.
        • Complete shut-down and start-up requirements.
        • Communicate effectively with oncoming shift.
        • Actively participate and maintain Work System initiatives.
        • Fulfill overtime requirements necessary to ensure production and distribution requirements are met.
        • Assist in other areas or perform other duties, as assigned.

    Required Skills

    BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS:

      • 3+ YEARS OF MACHINE OPERATION EXPERIENCE IN A MANUFACTURING ENVIRONMENT
        • 18 years or older
        • High degree of mechanical ability. Must have skills to perform the basic technical tasks, including experience with various hand tools
        • Well-developed communications and interpersonal skills
        • Basic computer literacy and keyboarding skills
        • Ability to work in a high paced and multi-taking environment
        • Maintains positive team environment
        • Demonstrated organizational skills and highly detail oriented
        • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
        • Ability to follow verbal and written instruction
        • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
        • Must be able to lower up to 30 pounds from a height of up to 4 feet
        • Must be able to carry up to 30 pounds

     

    EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
    • Must be willing and able to work overtime-required to cover the opposite shift.

     

    SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS:

    •  12-hour shifts with rotating weekends off. 
    • Must be willing and able to work overtime.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position, with or without accommodation. This includes: Walking or standing for extended periods of time, up to 12-hours; Lifting to 50lbs; Carrying to 30 lbs.; Lowering to 30 lbs. from a height of 4 feet; Visual acuity and depth perception; Working in various temperatures & humidity levels.
