    Position Description

    Job Summary

    The packaging engineer is expected to lead efforts to develop the packaging approach and design for new products launched within the CertainTeed Siding Products Group. This individual is expected to use their knowledge in packaging and corrugated materials to design packaging that will ensure that our product can be reliably shipped without damage. In addition, this individual will support our plants to solve packaging issues that compromise our product quality.

    MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Packaging design for new product development

    Under guidance of management:

    • Design packaging approaches for new product launches, including material selection, carton dimensions, nesting patterns, and graphics
    • Take ownership of all the packaging specifications and release them to the plants for use
    • Plan and execute plant trials to evaluate the packaging design for new product launches
    • Perform testing to evaluate the product quality (shipping tests, creep, abrasion, damage) and carton strength testing (edge crush, basis weight and flute determination) to evaluate the packaging design
    • Attend project review meetings well prepared and ready to report results of tasks.

    COMPETENCIES:

    • Strong attention to detail and can work independently or as part of a team
    • Must possess the ability to; (1) understand new concepts quickly; (2) determine the appropriate approach; (3) organize, schedule, and coordinate work; and (4) communicate results effectively
    • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Project, and PowerPoint
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Self-motivated and hands-on

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging or a Bachelor of Science degree in related technical field
    • Internship or co-op experience, preferred
    • Experience in corrugated carton design using CAD (SolidEdge, Artios, Impact), preferred
    • Experience in CAD carton cutting table, preferred
