Pay is $12/hour. The shifts may include night and weekend work. Typical internship roles available in the Newsroom include: Analytics: The Analytics Intern will work closely with the Audience and Innovation team to identify and measure key performance indicators across our social and digital platforms. This intern will work side-by-side with our lead Analytics Editor to help keep track of trends and reader behavior with our journalism. Candidates should demonstrate an interest in media analytics and be quantitatively-minded. Previous experience with Microsoft Excel/Google sheets is preferred. Arts and Lifestyle: We are looking for a reporter who is excited about covering the regions fine arts scene, popular culture, food and dining, and things to do in the city, as well as uncover interesting trends about how we live today. The ideal candidate should be a self-starter and excited about crafting and telling stories from unexpected and new angles. Audience: The Audience intern will assist with a variety of duties essential to the distribution of our journalism and engagement with our readers. The Audience team oversees the Inquirers branded social media accounts, on-site commenting, user-generated content initiatives, offering SEO guidance and tracking key readership analytics. Were looking for someone comfortable with these aspects of digital journalism and eager to further develop these skills. Business: We seek reporters who are intrigued by the biz world, from startups and disruptors to bitcoin, e-sports, local breweries, and anything else that is bought and sold.This is an opportunity to hone the skills of business reporting. Youll be encouraged to tell dramatic stories, use data and try some experiments that take our work to new audiences. Data Reporting: You will joining the Inquirers 13-member, Pulitzer-winning investigations team, working with senior data reporters to support investigative and breaking news stories. You will need to have experience gathering, cleaning and analyzing data. Coding skills would be a plus. Express: The Express Desk covers breaking news, viral stories, and multiple angles on the biggest stories of the day. Express reporters often kick off news coverage and then work in tandem with beat reporters throughout the newsroom. For live events like concerts or protests, Express reporters are likely to be at the center of the action, or anchoring our live posts taking in feeds from multiple locations. Were looking for writers who want to be exposed to the broadest array of topics and story formats, and can work closely with the Homepage and Audience teams to ensure that our readers are getting the most relevant news in the most timely fashion. Cross-training with the Homepage team will be available for those who also wish to learn web production. Health: We are looking for an energetic reporter to write about health and wellness trends among young adults. Prefer a fluent Spanish speaker. Innovation: The Innovation team intern will assist with a variety of duties that support storytelling experimentation both on and off-platform. The mission of the team is to captivate readers and inspire the newsroom by telling great stories and showcasing the power of creative and thoughtful digital storytelling. Were looking for someone who is interested in furthering their knowledge and skills around experimental digital storytelling, and who thrills at the opportunity to have a hand in all aspects of a story: from the text, to interactives, to visuals, to the narrative approach. News Developer: We are looking for someone with some level of prior programming experience (JavaScript preferred) who is interested in working with the news developers on the team and expanding his or her skills in programming. This intern will work with the news developers on a variety of projects, like building templates for stories, longform storytelling, or tools within the newsroom. News Features: Our desk covers the changing world -- from sexual identity and gender issues to race, faith, class and social justice. We write about immigration and gentrification, transportation and development while seeking to evoke the distinctive character of Philadelphia and its surrounding towns. We want curious, clever writers and we seek applicants with a balance of reporting and writing chops. Opinion: The print and digital editorial pages, which serve as the institutional voice of the Inquirer and Daily News, put a premium on original reporting and independent thinking. We argue, advocate, illuminate and explain a wide variety of issues, and we want writers who seek understanding and insight into how issues interconnect to shape peoples lives. Were looking for someone to write signed opinion pieces and occasional unsigned editorials reflecting the editorial boards consensus opinion. We expect a writer versatile enough to switch between deep dives and rapid responses, and to seek out new approaches to the form. Power & Policy: The Power & Policy desk is the largest news-gathering desk in the newsroom, with teams of reporters focusing on breaking news and impactful enterprise in key areas of coverage: Justice & Injustice; Politics & Governing; Education; and Policy & Solutions. Our reporters are in the courtrooms, the classrooms, the capitols and on the streets. We want interns who are curious, have a nose for news and are able to quickly pivot and respond to the story of the day/night/week or season. Print Operations: If you have solid news judgment and a flair for design and typography, you could join our desk this summer as a page designer, working on a variety of sections from news to features. The ideal candidate will be comfortable using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop and have an interest in and an aptitude for learning Hermes, our print layout system. We also are seeking copy editors who have an eye for detail, familiarity with the AP Stylebook, and a talent for writing headlines that capture the essence of a story in an accurate and compelling way. You will be asked to work with reporters and assignment editors to ensure that stories are fair, balanced, and complete. Ability to work quickly on deadline is a must. Regions: The Regions Desk is seeking interns to cover breaking news and enterprise in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey suburbs. Reporters will be based in bureaus in Cherry Hill or Conshohocken. We are looking for self-starters with diverse interests who are curious about the world around them. Regions interns have covered an array of stories from high-profile murder trials to lively features to short-term investigative work. A car is required for this internship. Sports: Multimedia intern for a variety of sports stories, with opportunity to cover the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers and Flyers alongside beat writers. At least one long-term (submitted by end of internship) reporting project is expected. Visuals (Photo and Video): We seek visual interns who are interested in covering news, sports and entertainment and can produce great photography and video that tells the stories of our area. Bring a multimedia eye to photography assignments, capturing video and other forms of multimedia in addition to producing compelling still photos. Looking for a self-driven journalist who can conceive and execute creative visual story ideas. Requirements: Each intern applicant must be an enrolled student -- preference is given to juniors and seniors.
