JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Quality Intern will report to the Quality Manager and have the opportunity to make an impact in the Quality department at the center of a complex glass mat manufacturing site. This role will assist in the quality effort and be involved in a variety of projects, focusing on exposure to Quality within the EHS, Production, Maintenance and Engineering areas. The Quality Internship with CertainTeed provides professional development opportunities and valuable applied learning in a manufacturing production setting.

During your internship you will have the opportunity to partner with several functional teams at the North Charleston, SC facility.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

• Understand the cross functional relationships between Quality and other areas of the business.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

• Develop planning, organizational and time management skills.
• Develop project management abilities by leading process improvement initiatives from start to finish.
• Partner with the site to assist with continuous improvement activities in the Quality, Safety, Production, and Maintenance departments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Quality Department
  • Participate with FMEA and Control Plan development.
  • Perform Lab Curvature testing on roll outs.
  • Shadow lab operators to learn physical property testing.
• EHS
  • Perform assigned Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
  • Engage and learn LOTO process when performed in the plant.
• Production
  • Participate in Process Tech daily audit.
• Maintenance
  • Collaborate with Maintenance and Production for labeling equipment lines, valves, switches and controls. This will be the largest part of the internship.
• Engineering
  • Participate on Winder installation if time allows (Implementation ~ July).

Required Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE & COMPETENCIES (SKILLS & ABILITIES):

• Junior/Senior status preferred, currently enrolled in college/university courses.
• The ability to manage multiple priorities and demanding timelines.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Understanding of ethics, compliance, and business conduct.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work an average of 40 hours per week, speak clearly so others understand, vision acuity to see details within a few feet of an observer, accepting of criticism and dealing calmly and effectively with high stress situations, sensitivity to other’s needs, positive demeanor, and model change management for the business. Must be capable of wearing personal protective equipment necessary to comply with government and company safety standards whenever engineered methods of reducing hazards or physical requirements cannot be reasonably accommodated. Job includes tasks that require walking, bending, twisting, gripping, stair and ladder climbing, entering confined spaces, navigating rough terrain and occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs. May require long periods of sitting, walking, and standing, working on a computer or engaging in telephone conversation.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Manufacturing plant is not temperature controlled; dust, fumes, and high noise areas are present inside plant areas. Manufacturing processes involve fiberglass. Noise levels exceed 80 dB in some areas of the site. Moving equipment such as forklifts, buggies, genie booms, industrial sweepers, travel throughout the facility, sometimes in congested areas.
