    Job Summary

    The Quality and Process Engineering intern will act in a cross-departmental function to support Quality and Process Control at the Hagerstown SidingManufacturing Plant. Core projects and goals will be focused on safety, quality, delivery, productivity, energy/cost reduction, and improvement of our quality and processs control standards. Problem solving approach will utilize World Class Manufacturing toolset. This role will be fun, hands on, and based heavily on the shop floor. The Quality and Process Engineering intern will focus on taking real waste out of the process to drive quality and process control improvements every day.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    Process Control Engineering 50%

    • Define processes controls to improve efficiencies, maintain acceptable levels of quality and reduce safety risks.
    • Define, manage, and complete capital and non-capital projects to meet objectives
    • Conduct process and product validation activities to ensure outputs meet requirements.
    • Provide hands-on assistance to Manufacturing personnel on the production floor to identify and understand opportunities for process improvements and implement solutions.
    • Maintain technical competence and keep informed on new developments in materials, process technology, and product applications to assure the most appropriate methods and materials are used.
    • Collaborate with the Process engineer/technicians to troubleshoot processing problems for areas of responsibility and implement control & reaction procedures for operators.
    • Define and standardize process targets and tolerances.
    • Define data collection systems, conduct analysis and present results/recommendations to the leadership team.
    • Identify and Deliver cost reduction initiatives.
    • Maintain high visibility on the production floor and recognize production operators as customers of work performed by engineering.

    Quality Assurance & Risk Management 50%

    • Analyzing process data to meet continuous improvement objectives; analyzing new and existing data & utilizing a risk-based approach to define and collect new data sources
    • Plant liaison for Quality Data Management System (QDMS); Improve Inspector/Operator identified issues, Define corrective actions to issues, and ensure completion of corrective actions
    • Execute the Data Connectivity Plan for FaCTory+ & Manufacturing 4.0; facilitate data inclusion, analysis, and actions within our QDMS
    • Contribute to the design and lead the implementation of the quality management system at the facility.
    • Proactively plan, control and assure product and process quality in accordance with established quality principles to eliminate potential sources of failure. This includes planning processes, material control, acceptance sampling and measurement systems.
    • Maintain, design, and implement Statistical Process Control; Define Critical to Quality Variables, defining sampling schemes, setting up charts, reaction plans, and action plans.
    • Collaborate with R&D, Manufacturing and Product Management to ensure quality standards are integrated into new products and processes so production performance and output is to the standards required.
    • Lead the Change Management process at the facility to identify, prioritize and mitigate risks related to planned changes.
    • Define and conduct raw material, product and process audits to ensure finished goods conform to specified requirements.
    • Oversee and/or initiate the development of measurement tools that enable product and process evaluation.

    Required Qualifications

    • 4-year engineering degree and a minimum of 2-years of experience in a data driven problem solving role within a manufacturing setting.
    • 2+ years Statistical Process Control (SPC) driving improved process improvement and improved quality performance
    • Demonstrated experience and advanced knowledge of data collection systems
    • Solid written and verbal communication skills in order to affect positive and professional interaction between the department and other internal groups.
    • Fundamental understanding of quality philosophies, principles, systems, methods, tools, standards, organizational and team dynamics, customer expectations and satisfaction, supplier relations and performance, leadership, training, interpersonal relationships, improvement systems and professional ethics.
    • Basic understanding of the audit process including types of audits, planning, preparation, execution, reporting results and follow-up.
    • Ability to develop and implement quality programs, including tracking, analyzing, reporting and problem solving.
    • A thorough understanding of problem-solving and quality improvement tools and techniques.
    • Understanding of human factors and motivation.
    • Familiarity with quality cost concepts and techniques.
    • Ability to acquire and analyze data using appropriate statistics and standard quantitative methods.
    • Proficient with Technology; MS Office, Programming (Python preferred), and technologically literate
    • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 2 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment through permanent employment or internship(s).
