THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE MUST RESIDE IN THE EASTERN OR CENTRAL TIME ZONE, AND MUST HAVE FOLDING CARTONS PACKAGING EXPERIENCE.
The Business Unit Operations Leader is responsible for directing and delivering on product and service quality requirements of our Clients. They provide strategic direction to the Facility/Site Leaders for the business. As such, the Ops Leader should be adept at developing tactical action plans based on the ability to assess current and future market opportunities, identify client trends, evaluate our current capabilities and achieve defined financial targets. General duties fall under these four categories:
SENIOR LEADERSHIP DUTIES:
- Participate in the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan
- Set clear operational equipment performance standards and operating cost objectives
- Collaborate with the Business Unit Leadership Team to develop and implement effective solutions to business challenges
- Drive the Business Unit to achieve and surpass sales and profitability goals
- Collaborate in the development, communication and implementation of effective growth strategies and processes
- Understand Client needs and develop effective strategies to improve upon existing capabilities/solutions and develop new capabilities/solutions
- Monitor competitor activity to recommend additional opportunities for RR Donnelley
- Understand initiatives driven by functional process leaders (e.g. Finance, HR, IT) and collaborate to bring business perspective and support the overall approach
- Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned
- Develop internal talent and recruit new people to the organization
- Display leadership skills that provide a vision and direction people follow
- Develop a culture of excellence and accountability
MANUFACTURING LEADERSHIP DUTIES:
- Work to ensure we have the proper equipment and people efficiency measurement systems in place
- Identify operational failures and work with Facility Leaders to put in place corrective actions
- Establish standard business processes across the delivery platform
- Establish operational measurement definitions and the tools to measure the equipment efficiency
- Establish regular review meetings with Facility Operations Leaders to review Productivity results
- Work with Business Unit President to establish standards for on-time delivery and turn-times
- Develops “Best in Class” metrics for Facility indirect and functional costs to determine the most efficient approaches at the facilities within the platform. By identifying best practices they can be replicated and shared between facilities in the platform to drive improvement.
- Works with I.T. to ensure we have the tools to support the execution of key business processes
- Possesses policy & process discipline with continuous improvement:
- Supports and guides facilities and their plant leadership in the maximization of operating efficiency and productivity.
- Ensures operations systems, procedures and policies are deployed effectively and are consistently applied at all operating locations. Oversees and holds plant leadership accountable for leading and developing strategies for continuous improvement, space/equipment utilization and effective labor management.
- Oversees and holds plant leadership accountable for establishing clear goals/objectives to enhance quality assurance, product safety, continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.
- Work with Corporate Leads to ensure company policy, training, and other miscellaneous requirements are met personally, and at each of their assigned facilities.
- Jointly establish project capital prioritization
- Ensure alignment between Client needs and our internal operational capabilities
- Work with Human Resources to standardize job descriptions across the platform and ensure we have proper pay scales to attract and retain people
- Work with Business Unit President to determine optimal number of sites in the Platform to deliver for our Clients
- Work with the BU President and Procurement Leader to develop procurement strategies for major “material” components and key equipment suppliers
SALES LEADERSHIP DUTIES:
- When relevant establish relationships with key Clients of the Business
- Understand the key Industry Segments that make up the Clients within the business and the relevant solutions
- Understand the Client Pricing profiles and provide input into acceptable pricing levels for the business
- Work with Sales Management to understand the business value proposition and its impact on the operational platform
- Work with the Sales Leader to understand the strategies to retain existing Clients and minimize “churn”
- Collaborate with other RRD businesses to understand companion offerings
- Work with Legal to understand key “terms & conditions” that are boundaries for agreements to ensure we have the ability to deliver on these commitments
FINANCE LEADERSHIP DUTIES:
- Manage the P&L to meet financial objectives set forth in the budget and forecast
- Understand cost drivers of the business and identify areas of good performance and areas that need attention
- Establish monthly review meetings with Facility Leaders to review the Detailed Income Statement
- Analyze the SGA cost of the business and determine methods to build the most efficient indirect cost structure to serve Client needs while minimizing expense to RRD
- Work with the Finance Leader to identify cost problem areas
- Be part of the AOP/Budget and forecasting process to determine revenue and margin projections
SCHEDULING/PLANNING OPTIMIZATION LEADERSHIP DUTIES:
- Provide the data to the Optimization Leader to monitor the loading and planning of key equipment and people assets of the business
- Collaborate to set objectives and KPIs to monitor capacity management and utilization
- Provide input to determine the optimal mix of work types that will yield the highest total profit dollars
- Ensure job cost data is collected accurately as the input to the cost rates that are reflected in our Pricing Systems
- Provide input into the Pricing Strategy based on optimizing equipment and people utilization
Required Skills
- Understanding of Lean Manufacturing and Statistical Process Control to drive operational improvement
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style Deep understanding of accounting, reporting and annual budgeting Excel at operating in a fast paced, community environment
- High sense of urgency
- Willingness to Travel (approximately 50%)
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, along with the ability to listen for understanding
- Proven experience overseeing and guiding the management of staffing, budgets and other fiscal operations impacting the P&L; financial acumen – can assess revenue and cost drivers of a business
- Consistent achievement of revenue and margin goals for area of accountability

Required Experience
- 4-year college degree required and preferred 10+ years of FOLDING CARTON OPERATIONS EXPERIENCE TO INCLUDE MULTI-PLANT LEADERSHIP
- At least eight (8) years of demonstrated leadership and vision in managing staff, groups and major projects or initiatives Unquestionable personal and professional character and integrity. Unquestionable work ethic and drive for the company’s success.
