    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Assistant Controller is part of the finance team, a group of dedicated individuals who combine diligent work with camaraderie and passion for the Foundation’s mission. The accounting team is jointly responsible for accounting for over 1,000 funds, 120 investment managers, and a full complement of internal departments. The Assistant Controller reports to the Controller of The San Francisco Foundation.

    The Assistant Controller is a key contributor to the team efforts to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the Foundation’s financial records, timely reporting and analysis of financial results, and maintenance of strong internal controls. This will be accomplished through individual work, contribution to Foundation-wide projects, and back up for other Finance staff.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Ensure that all general ledger transactions in Financial Edge are processed and recorded timely and accurately
      • Review, post and/or record entries posted to the general ledger from subledgers
      • Review monthly and quarterly account reconciliations prepared by the Senior Accountant and Staff Accountant
      • Manage monthly and quarterly closing schedules
      • Monitor integrations with Salesforce and Fluxx and communicate issues to Controller for follow-up
    • Manage ongoing treasury duties
      • Monitor bank account activity in Wells Fargo CEO portal and manage positive pay and fraud alert functions
      • Manage weekly grants and accounts payable process, including checks, ACH and wire transfer payments
      • Manage payments through Wells Fargo Payment Manager system
    • Manage expense reimbursement and corporate credit card payment process through Concur in accordance with the Foundation’s travel and expense policy
    • Manage invoice payment process through Concur InvoicePay system
    • Prepare or coordinate the preparation of assigned audit schedules by the Senior Accountant and Staff Accountant as requested by auditors for interim and year-end audit, including drafting financial statement and footnotes
    • Prepare or direct the preparation of schedules and reports for annual Federal and state tax filings
    • Manage quarterly tax accruals and estimated tax payments
    • Work with the Senior Accountant and Staff Accountant to document accounting processes via written scripts, updating as necessary, and make recommendations for improved procedures and controls
    • Collaborate with Philanthropy and Gift Planning personnel on the reconciliation of monthly and quarterly donor statements, and resolution of donor inquiries
    • Respond to audit inquiries from outside parties
    • Assist with implementation of new financial systems as required
    • Other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance or related field required, along with a minimum of 8 years directly related experience, including directing or assisting in the preparation of audit schedules and tax returns. CPA preferred, MBA a plus.
    • Requires in depth knowledge of general accounting principles, reconciliations, and documentation techniques. Must have the ability to manage, analyze, and summarize large amounts of data. Strong Excel skills are required.
    • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and attention to detail is a must.
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and across a team-oriented, multi-departmental office environment with a high degree of professionalism.
    • Experience within a non-profit or philanthropic organization is a plus.
    • High level of personal and professional integrity and ethics.

    The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with the skills to work independently with minimal supervision and be able to accurately manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

    SKILLS

    • Demonstrated ability to learn new technology systems and processes. Our core systems include Blackbaud’s Financial Edge, Salesforce CRM and Fluxx grants management.
    • Experience with computerized fund accounting and donor management systems a plus.
    • Experience with automated expense and invoice workflow systems, such as Concur a plus.
    • Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams.
