    Biomedical Engineer II, Sports Medicine R&D (Bio-Scaffold)-Medical Device Job Description Role Overview: The Biomedical Engineer II, Sports Medicine R&D is responsible for providing support for research and product development activities from concept development, prototyping to the final documented design. Responsibilities will occasionally include product support and sustaining activities. They will apply basic analytical and practical engineering skills in support of fully validated & verified medical devices ensuring compliance with the appropriate standards. This role will be focused on one of the fastest growing and exciting product lines at Smith and Nephew that involves novel implant and delivery technologies to serve our patients and customers in the shoulder repair market. This position is ideal for a less experienced engineer who is seeking to build their career in an engineer role where they will participate within a project team on project implementation and managing small scope projects or portions of a larger project. The candidate will be required to build relationships within the project team to ensure success of product development and research initiatives. The candidate will need to have the ability to work on problems with increasing complexity apply their engineering education to provide support to the broader team as required. There are no managerial responsibilities for this role. Responsibilities: * Execution of engineering projects and tasks such as: * Design and develop medical device components as well as associated test and fabrication fixtures * Understand and implement requirements and specifications * Execute verification and validation activities * Use empirical, numerical and experimental methods to analysis physical systems and designs * Identify design and product risks * Perform tolerance analyses of simple assemblies * Define test methods and conduct testing of complex mechanical systems * Explore the root cause of technical problems encountered (e.g. by observation, manipulation, and testing of failed systems) * Documenting work product with supporting evidence * Work with internal departments and external vendors to obtain prototype parts * Conduct detailed design reviews at various design stages * Document your proposed design solutions with tasks such as: * Support our intellectual property portfolio through generation and support of novel ideas and concepts * Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate within the project team and R&D staff * Gain a basic understanding of the clinical environment (i.e. current treatment methods, etc.) * Perform other related duties or responsibilities: * Support all company initiatives as identified by management and in support of quality management systems (QMS) or other regulatory requirements * Others not defined herein, on occasion or as assigned Education and Experience: BS in Engineering + 2 yrs experience or MS in Engineering Licenses/ Certifications: None Required. Competences: This individual should bring a level of enthusiasm, positive outlook, and inquisitiveness as they participate on cross-functional teams to resolve technical problems. The incumbent should have an affinity to learn and grow as they collaborate and support cross-functional team members from a wide range of Smith & Nephew departments in multiple geographic locations, as well as with suppliers and customers. The candidate should have a solid understanding of biological systems and principles, including cellular histopathology, protein structure and function, and the anatomy and physiology of human joints.
