Job Responsibilities Juvenile Detention Center - Richland County Under general supervision, exercises safety and security measures at the Detention Center. Also observes and reports activities of institutionalized population; provides counseling to population as function of treatment plan. Must be a mentor/coach for new JCO Is and provides school security as needed. Serves as a mentor/coach for new officers and provides school security as required. Assumes responsibility for the custody and care of youth through knowledge of and adherence to laws, rules, regulations, policies and standard operating procedures governing the South Carolina Department of Justice Department. Searches for contraband and provides security; counts, feeds, and supervises assigned youth in dormitories, classroom areas, and other areas; and performs security of various assigned areas. Provides custody and security of assigned youth including constantly observing actions of youth for prolonged periods. Performs "pat" and "strip" searches of youth. Physically restrains and secures sometimes assaultive youth. Transfers and transports youth, on foot and in vehicles and other forms of transportation. Maintains security in buildings, grounds, and other posts; intervenes during emergencies or altercations to prevent escapes and gain physical control of youth. Supervises movement of youth inside and outside the facility, and takes periodic counts of youth. Supervises youth in a correctional facility in the performance of work activities and during recreational and religious activities, and conducts inspections for health and safety hazards. Performs other related work as assigned. Minimum and Additional Requirements Juvenile Correctional Officer I - Trainee ($28,697) : A high school diploma/GED, be 21 years of age, and successful completion of the Criminal Justice Academy within one (1) year of employment. Juvenile Correctional Officer II - Certified ($32,002) : A high school diploma/GED, be 21 years of age, and who is South Carolina Class One Certified Law Enforcement Officer with a minimum of one (1) year of experience or related experience (i.e. 6 months as a Correctional Officer I or/and equivalency in correctional, security, military, law enforcement or police work or have a combination of education and experience) . Necessary Special Requirement : Certification by the SC Criminal Justice Academy in accordance with 23-6-430 of the Code of Law of South Carolina (Basic Detention). Applicants indicating college credit or degree(s) on the application will be required to bring a copy of college transcript to the interview. A copy of the transcript may also be uploaded as an attachment to the application, if required by the hiring department or if desired by the applicant. Ability to pass a competency examination on SCDJJ Policies and Procedures and Institutional guidelines and procedures. Ability to meet and maintain certification under the SC Law Enforcement Training Act. Essential Position that is under general supervision; work reviewed by supervisor on a daily basis; annually scheduled performance reviews. Willing to work any shift and stay over if necessary. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
