facility in San Diego, CA, to open Jan. 2019. "One of the really key
features of this building is our intention to make it an external
innovation and collaboration hub for San Diego, said David Weitz, head
of the unit. Our cafeteria and all-employees space is actually outside

Diego office. Here, everyone matters and you will be a vital contributor
to our inspiring, bold mission. Takeda Californias internship program
blends real world experience with an extensive overview of the
pharmaceutical industry. Knowledgeable mentors will provide guidance as
you gain professional hands-on experience. The internship will be ten to
twelve weeks in duration for the summer of 2018 with flexible start
dates. Student interns must be able to work full time. Interviews will
take place in Fall/Winter for selected students. POSITION
ACCOUNTABILITIES: The internship is a laboratory position that involves
the design, synthesis, purification and characterization of novel
chemical compounds for drug discovery efforts. The intern will work
closely with a medicinal chemist in a pharmaceutical research lab and
learn synthetic organic reactions and techniques. -Under the supervision
of a knowledgable mentor, design, synthesize, purify, and characterize
novel chemical entities for drug discovery efforts -Become proficient
and utilize lab equipment such as rotary evaporators, NMR, analytical
and prep HPLC, LC-MS, chromatography equipment, etc. -Communicate with
colleagues effectively and prepare presentations of work -Keep an
accurate, comprehensible, concise notebook in accordance with company
policy -Maintain a safe and organized lab bench -Become proficient with
chemistry drawing software (e.g., Chemdraw) and MS office applications
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: -Students
should be enrolled in a full time undergraduate program with an
excellent academic record in pursuit of a degree in chemistry
-Successful completion of General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry
(lecture and laboratory) is required. -Applicants should be highly
motivated with a strong interest in scientific research. -Students must
be legally authorized to work in the United States. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
-Manual dexterity required to operate standard laboratory and office
equipment -Carrying, handling and reaching for objects -Exposure to
hazardous/toxic/dangerous chemicals -Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
