    POSITION SUMMARY:  The New York City Department of Education’s Division of School Facilities is seeking a Deputy Director School Facilities to oversee the custodial and facility maintenance service operations with regard to work assignments and coordination with regional centers.  The Deputy Director will supervise custodian engineers and building managers and will interface with principals, educators, contractors, skilled trade and technical staff for both the Department of Education (DOE) and external agencies. Performs related work.

     

    REPORTS TO: Director of School Facilities

     

    DIRECT REPORTS:  Regional Custodian Engineers

     

    KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Relationships will be fostered with Division of School Facilities managerial and technical staff, school based administration and educators.

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    • Provides overall direction and leadership in the operation and maintenance of public school buildings in a designated area.
    • Oversees and administers the custodial and facilities maintenance service operations with regard to work assignments and coordination with the regional centers.
    • Supervises custodian engineers and building managers.
    • Interfaces with Division of School Facilities administration, school based administration, skilled trade and technical staff directors to ensure the highest quality facilities among NYC public schools.

     

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

     

    MINIMUM

     

    1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of full-time, satisfactory progressively responsible experience in building maintenance including supervision of cleaning, operating, heating and maintaining building structures and grounds and their related mechanical and electrical equipment, 18 months which shall have been in a managerial or executive capacity; OR
    2. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of experience as described in “1” above, including 18 months in a managerial or executive capacity; OR
    3. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must possess a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and have the 18 months of managerial or executive experience as described in “1” above.

     

    By the time you are appointed to this position, you must have a MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVER’S LICENSE VALID IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK.  If you have moving violations, license suspension(s) or an accident record, you may be disqualified.  This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

     

    PREFERRED

     

    • Demonstrated success in building and contract management.
    • College degree particularly in the areas of facilities operations and maintenance or general management.
    • One or more of the following licenses or certifications:
    • High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer’s License issued by the New York City Department of Buildings;
    • Refrigerating System Operating Engineer Certificate of Qualification issued by the New York City Fire Department; or a professional facilities management certification, e.g., the Building Owners and Managers Institute’s Facilities Management Administrator (FMA), the Systems Maintenance Administrator (SMA), or the Systems Maintenance Technician (SMT) certifications.

     

     

    SALARY: $108,268+

     (Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not make less than their current salary.)

    Required Skills Required Experience

  • Qualifications

     

    • Must be able to work with various graphic design and layout software applications commonly used on Mac's and PC's. 
    • A thorough understanding of digital file formats (pdf, tiff, eps) from different operating systems (Mac and PC) is required. 
    • Experience with Preps imposition software and Kodak Prinergy workflow is preferred. 
    • Advanced color management skills and the ability to work with different digital file formats are required. 
    • Must have the ability to output digital files to various output devices; must have the ability to continue to learn and use new graphics software on an ongoing basis. 
    • Must have an understanding of the offset printing process and how one color affects another. 
    • Mechanical skills using small hand tools in order to make minor repairs and perform maintenance on proofing and CTP equipment.
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds frequently.
    • Ability to handle all sizes of plates.
