United Technologies Research Center Inc. in Berkeley CA is hiring applied mathematics interns into the Cyber Physical Systems group. The group takes on cutting-edge challenges in intelligent systems, automated reasoning, and intelligent building applications. The broad array of business challenges includes supply-chain management, machine learning for safety critical systems, and human-machine optimization. Were looking for people eager to construct new algorithms for high dimensional mixed integer nonlinear programs in the presence of uncertainty. The goal of the internship will be to construct novel algorithms with theoretical guarantees. The intern will also be expected to participate in actual implementation of the algorithms in a prototype programming language and numerically demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approaches on supply-chain problems. The algorithms, however, will be required to be general and applicable to a wide range of applications such as machine learning. The Applied Mathematics intern will be responsible for contributing to current research projects on stochastic optimization. Knowledge and familiarity with optimization theory, statistics, and dynamical systems theory is critical. A balance of development, mathematics and problem framing skills is essential. Education / Certifications The successful candidate is currently enrolled in a graduate course for a Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or related disciplines. *Experience / Qualifications Course work or previous internships on topics related to optimization theory, dynamical systems, and probability theory & statistics.
