Position Overview: Materials Scientist/Physicist/Chemist/Chemical Engineer Materials R&D UTC Aerospace Systems The materials department is part of UTC Aerospace Systems Engineering organization and is responsible for advancing materials and process technology development, materials and process requirements for parts, materials characterization, providing analytical services, conducting root cause investigations and working closely with external suppliers to ensure part quality. This position will report to Materials Research and Development Manager and will be located in Windsor Locks, CT. The Materials Research and Development Center has an opening for a Materials R&D Scientist to work in the design, development and testing of high temperature composites, including carbon-carbon composites (C-C) and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Primary Responsibilities: Conceptualize, propose, manage and perform experimental, development and analytical R&D in support of high temperature friction and structural materials for aerospace. Operate, diagnose, and improve upon deposition systems for high temperature composite materials. Define and lead research programs for business units relative to their needs. Continue and expand existing programs in support of technical innovation and business strategies. Interact closely with personnel at business divisions to identify opportunities for application of engineering tools and scientific expertise to product development and engineering processes relative to high temperature composites, friction and wear. Collaborate with business units to identify new R&D programs and secure internal/external funding to develop innovative ideas. Identify and develop emerging materials and process technologies for the enterprise or SBU. Prepare technical reports incorporating conclusions and recommendations. Education: A Masters degree in one or more of; physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science or a related field of Engineering. A PhD is preferred. Basic Qualifications: The selected candidate should have at least 2 years of experience in several of the following areas of technical expertise: Physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and a demonstrable knowledge of how to produce carbon-carbon and/or CMC high temperature composites. Experience with medium to high vacuum systems and vacuum furnaces. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge. Familiarity and working knowledge of state of the art CVD/CVI systems and equipment. Experience with processing of materials (carbon and ceramics) and how it affects friction behavior. Experience and understanding of fundamental physical and chemical processes related to carbon-carbon and CMC materials. An understanding of materials analysis techniques using SEM, optical microscopy, thermal and chemical spectral analysis. The ability to work and interact with staff at all levels. A track record as a team player who also enjoys working closely with others to accomplish goals. The individual should be customer oriented and have a track record of delivering results. The person should have a proven record as a self-starter and innovator. Must be an excellent communicator in both written and oral terms.
