    CNC PROGRAMMER

    CNC Programmer at GPI has the primary task of creating program “code” to produce parts on CNC machinery (Haas milling centers and turning center) and other CNC machinery (CNC mills and waterjet). As the GPI PDC is a small shop, the CNC programmer will also support related tasks such as checking drawings for manufacturability, standards and completeness and assist in production control execution and best practices.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CNC PROGRAMMER:

    • analyze job orders/requirements
    • review CAD models and/or blueprints
    • make calculations to determine where/how materials should be machined
    • define the best sequence of machining steps
    • decide tools, methods, speeds, feeds and fixtures to be used
    • then generate program code using computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) software to capture all these decisions
    • run simulation tests
    • conduct quality testing and correct/improve program code to increase efficiency, quality and safety;
    • communicate effectively with other programmers, shop floor management, machinists/setup and operators and engineering
    • work as a team member with shop manager, engineering, machinist, production control all to produce quality parts of best design at lowest cost
     
    

    SKILLS REQUIRED

    • Proven machining ability
    • should be mechanically inclined and understand the basics of electronics and computers.
    • Ability to determine most cost-effective method to product part, either using internal processes or if outside sourcing is a better alternative
    • Attention to detail
    • Ability to create detailed instructions for CNC operators
    • Understand priorities and make decisions reflecting this.
    • EDGECAM software experience a plus
    • Post processor editing capability a plus
    • CAD skills, ability to manipulate geometry, familiarity with SolidWorks a plus
    • Ability to communication with part designers, providing manufacturing in-site into how to improve parts, performance and cost
     
    

     

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • High School diploma or GED
    • Associate degree in CNC programming or computer-related field or a mechanical field preferred.
    • 10 years machine shop experience preferred with a minimum of 5 years as programmer.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT INCLUDES:

    • Air-conditioned work area
    • All equipment is new, purchased in 2020.
    • Small shop, less than 10 machinists.
    • R&D environment.
    • Direct contact with design engineers.
    • Result of parts production are assembled and tested in same building as parts fabrication.
