    University of Virginia/Virginia Tech Internship

    Controls Program Management Engineering Intern

    Location: Indianapolis, IN

    Must be a third-year student (junior standing) at Virginia Tech or the University of Virginia to be eligible for this internship.

    We are excited to continue the partnership with both Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia for our annual internship program. Since 2011, we have provided students value-add internships exploring the engineering functions with our businesses.

    We are looking for talented engineers to join us for an exciting and value-add 12-week summer internship. Our goal is to provide a breadth of exposure to the technical aspects of Controls Systems engineering and to a variety of people networks to help you maximize an exciting and purposeful learning and developmental experience. This placement will be in our Program Management team.

    Who we are:

    The Control Systems is an engineering function within the Rolls-Royce Aerospace business. The function develops, simulates, and manufactures components used to control engines on a large portfolio of aircraft as well as several other industries partners.

    Within Controls Systems, we are divided into the following sub-departments: Software, Systems, Simulation, Electronics, Mechanical, Supplier Engineered Equipment, and Supporting existing fleet. Each sub-department works closely together in the design, testing, incident investigation, and supply chain management to ensure our customer’s needs are met.

    Our Program Management team within Controls provides the support, skillsets, and relationships to drive change for both short- and long-term goals of the agreed program to the cost, schedule and quality agreed with the customer.

    What you’ll do:

    As a Project Management Intern, you will have the opportunity to gain experience in the Controls Core Engineering Team. The team is responsible for the delivery of Controls projects (Systems, Software of Hardware) Specific areas of work and support for the project will vary depending on the specific project needs at the time, and the areas of interest of the intern.

    Work activity may include supporting successful delivery to schedule and cost for a specific work package or packages. Also, work may include management of financial data, Earned Value Metrics, Risk Management, and project reviews. Other types of support could include Resource Planning and Continuous Improvement Activities.

    What you’ll need:

    Ideal candidates will have strong demonstrations of interpersonal skills, curiosity,collaboration and team-oriented mindset,problem solving, critical thinking skills, and attention to detail, and overall, an eagerness to learn.

    To have a successful internship, you should have some familiarity with project management basics. Without the actual experience or classroom knowledge, you can get many of the basics from an online search.

    Candidates will be able to/have:

    • Ability to manage projects and goals with varying deadlines
    • Demonstrate writtenandoralcommunication, and presentation and facilitationskillsto a variety of audiences (e.g.,technical experts, leadership,andEngine Programs)
    • Experience with Microsoft tools would be beneficial - PowerPoint, Word, and Excel will all be used to support different projects
    • Ability to travel to worksites to perform responsibilities.

    The internship role will be based in Indianapolis, IN and will have some occasions for needed travel to the nearby facility in West Lafayette, IN.

    Relevant Majors and Experiences:

    • Industrial and/or Systems Engineering, any Engineering or Technology Degree
    • Business Studies/Management
    • Project Management
    • And/or any analytical subject or background

    Minimum GPA: 3.0

    Work Authorization Eligibility: Must be a U.S. Citizen

    This internship is employed by the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech through an endowment grant given to the selected students. All communications surrounding pay and auxiliary benefits will be presented at time of offer from each university.
