Position Description: We are looking for a summer intern interested in learning about all aspects of energy used in the manufacture of our building products. USG is a significant user of electricity and natural gas at our plants. The Energy Dept. at USG manages energy from the standpoint of both cost and usage. Our goal is to deliver energy to our plants at the lowest possible cost and in the most efficient manner possible. We also investigate the potential use of alternative sources of energy such as solar, wind, cogeneration, fuel cell etc. In fact, our plant in southern California is home to two solar fields which generate enough electricity to power up to 2,000 homes. We are looking for a candidate to help the Technical Manager, Energy document how to input data and otherwise extract value from our newly developed energy metric reporting system. They will also assist the Technical Manager, Energy with the continued fine tuning of our new system. This will entail working with Energy Dept and plant production personnel to obtain, calculate, and consolidate metrics regarding USG's products. Our department conducts audits of our manufacturing facilities to identify cost reduction opportunities. One area of opportunity that we have a goal of paying particularly close attention to in 2018 is in the area of air compressor optimization.Therefore, the candidate will survey our plants to determine what steps our plants have taken to improve the efficiency of their compressor operations as well as to identify and fix leaks in their plant air systems. After the results of the survey are compiled the intern will work with the Technical Manager, Energy to determine next steps. Finally, we are looking for someone who would be interested in learning about how energy is used in our processes and in looking at potentially new and innovative energy reduction technologies. Other specific job accountabilities will include: 1. Tabulation of 2017 kiln BTU/lb data. 2. Assist with tabulating plant energy plan updates. 3. Assist with the endeavor to locate more up to date technology to measure the flow of natural gas into plant processes. 4. Interview plant personnel and assist with drafting an energy newsletter. 5. Research energy articles of interest for potential future distribution. 6. Develop metrics to determine the impact of load factor on plant electric costs. 7. Evaluate potential financial benefit of solar energy at various plant locations. 8. Analyze weekend power usage at various plant locations. Accountabilities for this summer position will range from working with various energy metrics to researching state of the art technologies. The candidate will need to be capable of communicating with personnel both at USG plants and at the Corporate office. Energy efficiency is a key to USG's ability to compete and we are looking for someone to help us in that endeavor. * Currently enrolled in a degree program at a recognized university in Engineering - minimum 2 years. * Experience with Microsoft Office products, particularly Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. * Strong analytical skills. * Good written and oral communication skills.
