Research Associate II - Protein Sciences Vertex Pharmaceuticals - San Diego, CA 92121 Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking an energetic and highly motivated research associate to join the Protein Sciences team. The candidate will work as part of a team of scientists to support the recombinant production of proteins for biochemical, biophysical and structural studies. The candidate will be working in a creative, dynamic environment and will be required to work with limited guidance in a team-oriented manner. The candidate is required to closely interact with molecular biologists and protein chemists in the group and must have strong interpersonal skills. Specific responsibilities include: Recombinant protein expression in E-coli, insect cell-baculovirus and mammalian cell systems; maintenance of cell lines and cell culture facility; high throughput expression screening and small/mid-scale protein purification. Recombinant expression and purification of integral membrane proteins. Proactively seek out and implement new technologies to improve expression and purification of membrane proteins for biochemical and structural efforts. Work effectively in a fast paced matrix environment and interact closely with molecular biologists and protein chemists within the Protein Science team. Minimum Qualifications A BS or MS in life sciences, with 2+ years of relevant experience in recombinant protein expression and purification preferably in an industrial setting. Proven hands-on experience in recombinant protein expression in Prokaryotic (E-coli) and Eukaryotic (baculovirus/mammalian) expression systems. Hands-on experience in insect cell culture and transfection. Experience in biophysical/biochemical protein characterization (Western blot, SDS-PAGE, MassSpec and Chromatography). Knowledge of principles of recombinant protein expression in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. Knowledge of fundamentals in protein chemistry and biophysical/biochemical protein characterization. Background knowledge in structural biology or membrane protein science is an advantage. Demonstrated independent thought/creativity in science. Excellent collaboration, organizational, communication (oral and written) and multitasking skills. Must be willing to work flexible hours to meet project timelines.
