We call it The Vulcan Way. ** ** Description Summary Description of Position The Apprentice Electrician works directly under the supervision of and assists a qualified Journeyman Electrician and will be responsible for electrical repairs, and maintaining electrical systems at aggregate and asphalt plants. As a result of participation in this apprenticeship program the individual will become familiar with motor control, NEC Code, PLCs, and gain experience with low and medium voltage. The individual will gain knowledge of electronics and strong knowledge of Federal, state, and local electrical codes, electrical theory, motor control. This individual must be mechanically inclined and have the ability to trouble shoot electrical problems. Tasks associated with the job include but are not limited the following: Essential Duties and Responsibilities:_ _ Perform highly diversified duties to install and maintain production machines and plant facilitys electrical equipment.__ Plan, layout, install and repair a wide variety of complex electrical equipment including automatic machine and process controls, control centers and panels, relays, circuit breakers, electronic controls, tape actuated controls and other equipment involving tube or transistor circuits.__ Diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, detect and replace defective control modules, test and make adjustments.__ Perform regular preventive maintenance on machines and plant facilities including air compressors, nitrogen lines, and lighting systems.__ Perform a variety of plumbing maintenance and carpentry functions including building of carts and layout boards without prints.__ Use a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters and materials handling equipment in performing duties.__ Must be capable of wiring new offices.__ Detect faulty operations, defective material and report these and any unusual situations to proper supervision.__ Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit, using tools, such as hacksaw, pipe threader, and conduit bender.__ Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas.__ Apprenticeship Requirements Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application. Applicants must be physically able to perform the work of the trade. Lifting: raising or lowering an object up to 40lbs. Climbing: ascending or descending objects usually with hands/feet; e.g. stairs, ladders, using a man lift. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations, such as working at elevation and confined spaces, temperature changes variations in temperature from extremes of heat and cold weather. Must be a high school graduate or the equivalent. One full year (2 semesters) of high school algebra with a minimum grade of "C," or the equivalent or one semester of college algebra with a minimum grade of "C" or the equivalent is preferred but not required for the position. Applicant must have a valid California Driver's License and may be required to drive a Company service truck. Air and ground travel will be required to all West Region locations for daily site visits or for extended periods generally less than one week and occasionally to other Vulcan divisions. Applicant must be able to travel approximately 50% of the time.The apprentice will be required to attend and successfully complete a five year apprenticeship program that includes a classroom setting during the week on their own time.
