    Job Description

    The Mechanical / Automation Engineer is responsible for the design, development and testing of all aspects of complicated mechanical & automation components, systems and equipment including new and existing products. This includes sustaining existing mechanical and automation systems.  Responsible for researching, recommending and implementing new design tools and processes.  Responsible for supplier qualifications and management.

    This position is responsible for training and mentoring and advising other engineers and technicians on mechanical design concepts, manufacturing techniques and materials including manufacturing processes and tolerances.  This also applies to personnel at other Western Digital worldwide manufacturing locations.  Some travel is required.

    REQUIRED:

    • Bachelor or Masters degree in Mechanical engineering
    • More than 5 years experience

     

    PREFERRED:

    • Experience in automation industry is preferred
    • Experience in high volume manufacturing

     

    SKILLS

    • English proficiency
    • Project management experience
    • Proficient with Autodesk Inventor 3D design software.
    • Solid modeling, detail drawings, and creating assemblies.
    • Design analysis for fit and function.
    • Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D design software is desirable.
    • Proficient with Autodesk AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Mechanical 2D software.
    • Proficiency with basic electrical design.
    • Equipment troubleshooting in support of maintenance as required.
    • Proficiency with common mechanical engineering measurement and hand tools.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Complete the product design, analysis and development of mechanical components, systems and equipment, including assembly and part drawings as well as other required documentation from design concept to manufacturing release
    • Research new development technologies, make recommendations to Management and oversee implementation
    • Review and continually improve departmental process and policies as it relates to mechanical development process
    • Develop multiple design concepts and present to peers
    • Create a document package that specifies the complete design and implementation of a product, including, but not limited to: 2-D drawings, Bills of Materials and Engineering Change Orders; Responsible for implementing documentation updates and changes to existing products
    • Assure system and product quality by designing testing methods
    • Test finished product and/or system capabilities
    • Confirm fabrication, assembly, and installation processes
    • Generate testing and validation plans for designs and execute on them
    • Prepare product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
    • Analyze current designs and products for improvements and/or troubleshooting
    • Research various mechanical engineering issues including parts and processes
    • Verify that design and project objectives meet requirements
