    Job Description

    The HDD Heads & Media Development Wafer Process Engineering team is looking for entry level engineers to join our team to begin and develop their career. Ideal candidates will have recently earned or are pursing a BS, MS, or PhD in Applied Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. In applying for this opportunity, you would be considered for the following roles:

    • METROLOGY ENGINEER IN FREMONT, CALIFORNIA - This engineer is primarily responsible for wafer dispositions, recipe engineering and measurement failure troubleshooting in a wafer production line of 24/7. The responsibilities consist but not limited to: data review and disposition; communicate to the primary Process/Metrology engineers; create/modify recipes on various metrology tools - AFM, Topography, CDSEM/FIB, Thin Film (dielectric and metal Thin Film) etc.; and troubleshooting of metrology measurement failures. WEEKEND WORK SHIFT: 10 hours a day primarily in day hours (but flexible), 4-days a week: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
    • THIN FILM PROCESS ENGINEER IN FREMONT, CALIFORNIA - This engineer is primarily responsible for developing thin film deposition processes for advanced writers with designed magnetic, thermal-mechanical, and electrical performance, set up and transfer new materials and processes from development to manufacturing. In this role, you will work with cross-functionally to thin film processes into the framework of the overall process and device architecture; design of experiments (DOE) and data analysis to understand process sensitivity and improve process capability; analyze complex databases to assess and solve process issues; and conduct Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) and tolerance analysis for high volume manufacturing. Ideal candidates will have a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or Engineering, and hands-on experience with device microfabrication, aggressive experiment planning and project management.

    • University students who graduated or are graduating from May 2020 to December 2021 with BS, MS or PhD in Applied Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
    • Creative, self-motivated, self-learner with superior teamwork skills
    • Developing technical skills and area of study towards, but not limited to, photolithography, dry or wet etching, electroplating, or thin film deposition processes, FEI, AFM, profilometers, reflectometer, scatterometry, SEM, and optical inspection
    • Proficient analytical skills
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work on the resolution of any issue and to interact with various interdepartmental engineering and support organizations.
    • Demonstrated project driving skills, capable of managing projects with set milestones and timeline, and ability to execute with minimal supervision.
    • Eligible Right to work in the US without requiring Western Digital to commence or sponsor an immigration case in order to employ you (for example, H-1B or other employment-based immigration case), preferred
