Job Description

Western Digital, the premiere producer of storage solutions including hard disk drives (WD and G-Technology brands) and solid-state drives (SanDisk brand), is seeking an engineer with experience performing XRR on thin-film stacks.  Magnetic media used to store information in hard drives is composed of tens of thin films ranging from angstroms to tens of nanometers in thickness. 

The candidate will join a team of dozens of electron microscopists and materials scientists who support Western Digital's research, development, and manufacturing efforts world-wide. This position is located in our world-class Analytical Sciences Laboratory in San Jose, California.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• This position involves using a Panalytical X’Pert XRD/XRR instrument to collect XRR spectra on magnetic media and interpreting that data using Panalytical X’Pert Reflectivity and Panalytical Advanced Material Analysis and Simulation Software (AMASS) software to extract film parameters. 
• The candidate will need to write Python code to direct the Panalytical AMASS software to automate algorithms used to obtain results.
• This is challenging work – the successful applicant will be patient, detail oriented, and enjoy data modeling and critical thinking.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

• BS (minimum), MS or PhD (preferred) in Materials Science, Physics, or other related engineering discipline. 
• Significant experience with XRR data analysis is preferred. 
• Knowledge and application of coding in Python

SKILLS:

• Strong problem-solving abilities and the desire to work in a team environment are essential.
